Topic: Pirmin Zurbriggen

  INTERNATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEE - ATHLETES
Pirmin Zurbriggen, who grew up in Switzerland's Valois Alps, was the opposite of this stereotype: a deeply religious homebody.
Zurbriggen made his Olympic début in 1984, when he finished fourth in the downhill, missing a medal by only one tenth of a second.
Between the two runs of the giant slalom, Zurbriggen was riding on the chairlift when he witnessed a horrible accident in which a member of Austria's medical team was killed by a snow-grooming machine.

Washingtonpost.com: Tomba True to Word: Gets Gold in Giant Slalom
Zurbriggen, the defending World Cup giant slalom champion, was expected to breeze into the giant slalom with several medals, perhaps all gold.
Still, it was Zurbriggen who squinted into the glare off the steep incline, waiting for Tomba to emerge from around a corner for the last 10 seconds of his run.
It was Zurbriggen who looked at the electronic scoreboard to see that Tomba had skied the second run in 1:02.46, a bit slower than Strolz, but well within the margin needed to win.

Super Giant Slalom skiing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The discipline is relatively new and was created in the early 1980's in an effort to offset specialization in alpine skiing World Cup events caused by widely different technique and physical demands of technical and speed disciplines.
It was first introduced on the World Cup level in 1982 and was added to the FIS Alpine World Championships at Crans-Montana in 1987, where Swiss skiers Pirmin Zurbriggen and Maria Walliser won gold medals.
The first Olympic Super G competition occurred at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary where Franck Piccard of France and Sigrid Wolf of Austria took gold.

Zurbriggen's analysis after his successful run in which he left Bode Miller 22 hundredths of a second behind him: "I simply let the skis go and it was exactly the right thing to do.

Swiss phenomenon Pirmin Zurbriggen made history in Aspen in 1987, winning both the men’s downhill and the giant slalom.
In the GS, Zurbriggen showed he was at the top of his game, winning the race by almost a one-second margin ahead of Italy’s Richard Pramatton.
Zurbriggen’s teammate, Alpiger, called him the “best skier in the world” after his coup in Aspen.

He did not have to do better than that, because due to the computerized formula that measures winning and losing in the combined events, even an unspectacular finish in the second slalom run would have clinched Zurbriggen's second gold medal of the Olympics (he had already won a gold medal in the downhill).
His run was proceeding well until suddenly, approximately two thirds of the way down the course, the tip of his right ski caught a pole and Zurbriggen went down hard.
I don't know what motivated Pirmin Zurbriggen that day in Calgary, but I do know this: Champions in any walk of life are committed to the pursuit of their true potential, to answering the question "How good can I be?"

Designed by Heinz Julen for his sister and her husband (the former downhill ski champion Pirmin Zurbriggen), it is a more restful building than his View House, sleeker and less idiosyncratic.
Aside from the ground-floor extension housing the solarium, sauna, outside shower (known as the ice grotto), aromatherapy 'dream shower' and glass-sided pool, it has few of Julen's hi-tech touches, the main structure's façades being timber-clad or - on the south-west side, facing the Matterhorn - almost wholly glazed.
All the apartments, named after pistes on which Zurbriggen won a race, have balconies with superb views.
