The city is the administrative center of the Pirot District.
In XIX century Pirot was one of the centres of Bulgarian national revival.
In Pirot were born well-known Bulgarian literary critic and philosopher Krastio Krastev (1866-1919), the scientist Spas Vatzov (1856-1928), the painter Michael Krastev (1877-1956) etc. In 1878 Pirot was incorporated in Serbia.

Fourteen trucks carrying heating oil for the opposition-controlled towns of Nis and Pirot continue to be held up by Yugoslav authorities at the border with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, where they arrived on 24 November 1999.
Since the morning of 28 November 1999 the district heating system in Nis is reported to be operating again.

The first festival was organised in Pirot, Serbia and involved more than 100 children, who performed songs and dances from West Stara Planina, and 30 teachers from the region.

The two drawings that gathered the most votes were selected: one from a Serbian from Pirot and one from a Bulgarian from Belogradchik.
In the evenings children worked on three art projects: a photo exhibition entitled “Pirot in the eyes of children,” the design of an Aquapark in Pirot, and the design of “the school of my dreams.” The children’s work was presented during a special concert.
