During the ice age, the Missouri River (which forms the boundary between Iowa and Nebraska) completely flooded its valley with melt water from the mountains to the west and the great ice sheets to the northeast.
I have to admit being partial to one particular region of the loess hills in western Iowa, because I grew up in the area.
It is most easily reached by the highway running north of Pisgah, Iowa.
