Piss Christ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Piss Christ is a controversial photograph by American photographer Andres Serrano.
On the floor of the United States Senate, Senators Al D'Amato and Jesse Helms expressed outrage that the piece was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, since it is a federal taxpayer-financed institute.
Piss Christ was included in "Down by Law," a "show within a show" on identity politics and disobedience that formed part of the 2006 Whitney Biennial.

Piss Christ and the Serrano Controversy - A theological defence
Piss Christ found itself at the centre of controversy once again in October 1997, when Melbourne was host to two exhibitions of the work of Andres Serrano.
Piss Christ is not Serrano's more visually striking piece, but it does seem to have generated its own aura out of controversy, and has subsequently become a sort of standard bearer for many of the issues that Serrano's work addresses.
Piss Christ is indeed blasphemous to extent that it subverts the sacrificial interpretation of Christ's death.

Displaying the masculinity of Christ was not the only way the artists instructed their audiences—Steinberg also shows paintings where the Christ Child stares out from the painting while nursing on the Madonna’s fully displayed breast, and others which focus on the circumcision of the infant Messiah.
That is, the submersion of Christ in a jar of urine is offensive to evangelicals at least partly because the humiliation and scandal of the Incarnation is, in practical terms, typically ignored in contemporary evangelical art.
When Christ humbled himself to become a man, it was an immense act of humiliation; but when the God-man was nailed, naked, to a plank of wood, tortured and killed in the most publicly shameful and excruciatingly painful method in human history, the humiliation is unfathomable.

PlanetPapers - Piss Christ - Paradoxes of Aesthetics
This notion of "the image itself" is a major misunderstanding of the nature of art: the subject depicted, the means of its creation, the title it is given, the history of its reception, and the circumstances in which it is displayed, are all dimensions of the work and its effect on the viewer (51).
With Piss Christ, in terms of its public reception, it is the representative element - the title and the description of its creation which subordinate the image.
The whole effect of Piss Christ is because, powerfully, what you see is not what you expect to get - the external reference of sacredness is entirely undermined by the representative elements of the image, where the effect of blasphemy is felt.

Regarding his letter to the editor yesterday, I would like to direct Yuksel Keskin to the 1988 controversy surrounding Andres Serrano's highly publicized photograph "Piss Christ." In his piece, Serrano submerged a Christian crucifix in a glass of urine, and this depiction was displayed as art throughout the U.S. and Europe.
The "Piss Christ" launched a heated debate in the U.S. Congress, as Serrano's exhibit was funded by public tax dollars through the National Endowment for the Arts.
While "Piss Christ" was no less offensive to Christians than the recent cartoon depicting Mohammad was to Muslims, the Christian response was stridently different.

How much of the NEA budget does the NEA "piss away" money on things like "Piss Christ?" I suspect Piss Christ and its ilk are funded somewhere in the low thousands, like around 15,000 dollars.
As CNSNews.com reported in 2002, the NEA has generated controversy for years, thanks in large part to taxpayer-funded works such as "Piss Christ," the photograph of a crucifix immersed in urine that received NEA funding in the mid-1990s and was subsequently attacked by Sen. Jesse Helms (R-N.C.) and then-Sen. Alfonse D'Amato (R-N.Y.).
Piss Christ could indeed have been funded under the headings of either Creativity or Access.

The infamous Andres Serrano work Piss Christ - a photograph of a crucifix submerged in urine was attacked in two seperate incidents on the consecutive days of the opening weekend.
In a move almost as controversial as the work and the attacks themselves, the director of the gallery, Dr Timothy Potts subsequently closed the exhibition in order, he claimed to protect the saftey of the gallery and its staff.
It is interesting to note that the media reported the second attack as an attack on Piss Christ, while they fail even to mention the title of the other work (depicting a Ku Klux Klan member) that was kicked by the youth.

Pissing on the Koran is the symbolic equivalent of pissing on the consecrated Eucharist, a far greater transgression in the eyes of Christian believer than snapping a pic of a crucifix in some urine.
Even if one were to buy the Religious Right's contention that Serrano's photograph is in the same league as the Abu Ghraib abuses (which I don't), it's good to remember that they used Piss Christ as one of their excuses for gutting the NEA and eliminating funding for individual artists.

In Peter, again, Christ is said to be a sacrifice ‘without blemish,' that is, without the moral blemish of sin, not the physical blemishes which disqualified sacrifices; and we ourselves are said to be ‘sprinkled; with his blood (1:2,19).
Similarly, in John we are said to be ‘cleansed' by his blood ‘from sin' (1:7,9), the language of sprinkling and cleansing being drawn from the sacrificial ritual, and perhaps from the Covenant sacrifice of Exodus 24, also alluded to at the Last Supper.
Closely related to Casey's untenable contrast between sacrifice and abjection is another contrast, between a (true) kenotic Christ stripped of all power and a (false) concept of Christ as a divine master.
