The leaves of Pistacia atlantica often have galls, which are rich in tannins and are used to tan skins, beside their therapeutic use.
Pistacia atlantica was a common tree in the past in the whole area, but since it was also almost the only tree it was super-exploited for its wood, and is now localized on some mountains such as Jebel Bel‘ās, which derives its name from the tree.

Its wild relatives play a fundamental role in the conservation of ecosystems, particularly in those difficult areas prone to drought and characterized by poor soils, while there are also a source of pest and disease resistance for the cultivated varieties.
The resource base of Pistacia species is under threat of severe genetic erosion, because local varieties are being replaced by a few commercial types and wild species are being destroyed by human activities.
This activity was created to enhance the use of Pistacia genetic resources through the cooperative efforts among national programs across CWANA.

SALT RESPONSE OF SEEDS AND POLLEN OF FIVE PISTACIA SPECIES
The salt response of five Pistacia species at the germination stage has been investigated and we have evaluated if the germination capability of seeds and pollen under salt stress parallel to each other.
The results suggest a certain parallelism between the salinity tolerance at the gametophytic (pollen) and sporophytic (seed) phases.
If this conclusion is substantiated with a larger number of Pistacia species, it will offer a potential for selection at the gametophytic phase and therefore, for facilitating and speeding up the screening for salt tolerance.
