 Piston Tech - Team Integra
In a piston without gas ports, the ring is pressurized by gases that work their way to the back of the ring through the clearance between the ring and its groove.
Piston rings must seal (for good compression pressures and prevent oil from getting into the chamber), have shorter break-in period, and wear the walls less despite being closer.
When installing new piston rings remember to always check the end ring gap clearances according to manufacturer specs (a good rule of thumb for piston to wall clearances in Tegs is for every inch of cylinder bore use 0.0040-0.0043 in.

Hypereutectic pistons are stronger and can run narrower ring lands and tighter piston-to-wall clearances, since there is less heat expansion than standard cast.
Here you see a higher top ring and piston pin location placed at the level of the oil ring groove, both of which allows for a longer rod and better rod ratio in these forged race-only strutted pistons.

Performance Pistons, Larry Carley, Engine Builder, June 2005
Forged pistons have been around since the mid-1950s, and were used as original equipment pistons in many of the muscle car engines during the heyday of the muscle car era (mid 1960s to early 1970s).
Piston manufacturers are introducing new performance pistons for all of these applications as well as refining existing piston designs to reduce weight, and improve strength, durability and ring sealing.
Cast pistons are usually adequate for most passenger car applications, but when it comes to modified high output engines, marine engines, boosted engines (turbocharged or supercharged), or engines that are "bottle-fed" nitrous oxide, a piston upgrade is usually a must.

A ring of holes drilled round each cylinder constituted auxiliary ports which the piston uncovered at the inner end of its stroke, and these were of considerable assistance not only in expelling exhaust gases, but also in moderating the temperature of the cylinder and of the main exhaust valve fitted in the cylinder head.

 Piston And Ring Technology
Piston rings perform a number of important functions.
Ring groove smoothness is likewise extremely important; any waviness or roughness causes poor ring seal and can lead to microwelding—a destructive situation where, under extreme pressure, the rings momentarily attach themselves to high spots on the ring groove.
Traditionally, these gapless rings went in the second groove along with a conventional top ring, but ring technology refinements plus the new thinking on ring sealing has led Total Seal to revise this installation scheme and introduce a new line of gapless top rings that achieve significantly less blow-by under real-world running conditions.
