The falls mark a significant change in the lay of the land from mountains down to a lowland stream.
Above Pistyll Rhaeadr the river is known as Afon Disgynfa and below as Afon Rhaeadr.

The Revd Worthington, vicar of Llanrhaeadr-ym-mochnant between 1748-78 was instrumental in getting the turnpike road built from Llanrhaeadr to the falls, the room he caused to be built for sheltering visitors being replaced in the early 19th century by Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn by a rustic picturesque cottage 'for tea drinking'.
Most of the later literary associations are with visitors however, such as the poem about Pistyll Rhaeadr, celebrated by Dewi Wyn, one of the first Welsh descriptive poets.
Pistyll Rhaeadr was sketched by in primitive style by J. Lewis between about 1735-40, by John Evans in 1794 and by Francis Nicholson 1810, and general views of the Berwyns were sketched by Revd John Parker in about 1825 (National Library of Wales).

Entitled ‘Do not read this if you suffer from vertigo’ the review was a well-written piece of work describing one of the world’s largest and most impressive waterfalls.
As it happens at the time I was considering writing an opinion on a waterfall close to where I live, but decided to shelve the idea after reading the review because Pistyll Rhaeadr seemed to pale into insignificance compared to the majesty of this South American Waterfall.
Not quite as high as the Foz do Iguacu, Pistyll Rhaider, which translates as ‘the spring of the waterfall’; is nevertheless an impressive cascade of 240 ft and is the highest waterfall in Britain south of the Scottish highlands.

The waterfall at Pistyll Rhaeadr was declared the 1000th Site of Special Scientific Interest in Wales in May.

So, Denise our guide for the day, had us assembled at the foot of Pistyll Rhaeadr, Wales highest waterfall.
Before we reached the cafe, we had a short stop at the top of the waterfall.
The centre area is cleaned by a cat, and anything else, that can be reached by a rather large dribbling red-eyed St Bernard, is slobbered away nicely.

After a mile of Sherpa-like trudging up the mountainside above the spectacular Pistyll Rhaiddar waterfall - the highest in Wales - this remote ring (marked as a cairn on the OS map) stands at the head of a long and steep-sided valley.
We visited Pistyll Rhaiddar waterfall back in 1997, but we hadn't the courage to climb the steep hill to visit the Rhos y Beddau circle.
It is situated about 10 miles south west of Oswestry, near Wale's tallest waterfall Pistyll Rhaedr (taller than the Niagara Falls).
