Pita Russell Sharples CBE (born 20 July 1941), a Māori academic and politician, currently co-leads the Māori Party, he currently is the member for Tamaki Makaurau(Auckland City) in New Zealand's Parliament.
Sharples, of the Ngati Kahungunu iwi, was born in Waipawa, a town in Hawke's Bay.
Sharples contested and won the seat of Tamaki Makaurau, the Māori electorate covering urban Auckland, in the General Election on 17 September 2005.

Pita Sharples (Ngai Te Kikiri o te Rangi and Ngäti Pahauwera) has a doctorate in antrhopology/linguistics and is formerly Professor of Education at the University of Auckland.
Dr Sharples founded the first kura kaupapa Maori in the country at Hoani Waititi in 1985, and later developed the first whare kura (secondary school) for graduates of kura kaupapa.
Dr Sharples pioneered the development of the Race Relations office in NZ and was appointed the inaugural chief executive officer from 1972-1980.
