Topic: Pitch bend

Guitar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The bending stress on the neck is considerable, particularly when heavier gauge strings are used (see Strings and tuning), and the ability of the neck to resist bending (see Truss rod) is important to the guitar's ability to hold a constant pitch during tuning or when strings are fretted.
Conversely, the ability to change the pitch of the note slightly by deliberately bending the neck forcibly with the fretting arm is a technique occasionally used, particularly in the blues genre and those derived from it, such as rock and roll.
Another type of pitch bender is the B-Bender, a spring and lever device mounted in an internal cavity of a solid body electric guitar that allows the guitarist to bend just the B string of the guitar using a lever connected to the strap handle of the guitar.

Portamento - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Portamento is a musical term currently used to mean pitch bending or sliding, and in 16th century polyphonic writing refers to a type of musical ornamentation.
In MIDI sequencing, portamento can be generated by using a channel message that creates a sliding effect by smoothly changing pitch from the last note played to the pitch of the currently playing note.
Vibrato is a repetitive smooth change in pitch that occurs in rapid cycles.

 Pitch Bend
The Pitch Bend Change message is normally sent from a keyboard instrument in response to changes in position of the pitch bend wheel.
The pitch bend information is used to modify the pitch of sounds being played on a given Channel.
Two bytes are required to allow fine enough resolution to make pitch changes resulting from movement of the pitch bend wheel seem to occur in a continuous manner rather than in steps.

 Ketron SD1 Tip #1
The one on the farthest left is a pitch wheel and the one next to it is a modulation wheel.
The default setting from the factory is for pitch bend only in the amount of 2 half-steps, both up and down, but it can do much, much more.

 MIDI Tuning Technique
Rather it specifies a pitch in a 128 element pitch set whose elements are identified by integers in the range 0...127.
In practice, tuning resolution is limited not by the finite precision of pitch bend but by synthesizer implementation, which often throws away some of the lower bits of pitch bend.
In order to use the pitch bend tuning technique, simultaneous notes that require distinct pitch bends must be played on different channels.

Six-String Synthesis - Exploring MIDI Guitar
Pitch Bend commands tell a synth or sampler whether to bend pitch sharp or flat, but not always how far to bend it; the precise interval depends on the receiving instrument's range settings.
Bending notes and simultaneously sweeping the filter is a potent and expressive trick, and adding a delay effect with regeneration will enhance the sweeps.
The first mode lets you disable Pitch Bend at the source with the flip of a switch, which is handy for emulating pianos or organs.

Justin : Animator - Adding Realism to MIDI Music: Pitch Bend
Using these values, add a single pitch bend event at the same time position as each of the notes to be replaced.
The second pitch bend went directly on beat two, the third was placed at the same location as the existing D note (which was subsequently removed), and the final bend event (to reset the bend level) was placed at the same time as the C note following this sequence.
It's sounding even better, but there is a side-effect to this technique: because we replaced some notes with pitch bend messages, we also lost the velocity adjustments of the removed notes.

 Defining Nonstandard Tunings
Notice that pitch bend affects every note on a given channel; therefore, it is generally not possible to play several notes on one channel whenever alternate tunings are desired.
The pitch bend is sent, followed immediately by the pitch from the table.
The second is a pitch, also between 0 and 127, and the third is the pitch bend, between -100, and 100.

Features for Musicians and Composers, and Scale Designers
To deal with this, FTS minimises the number of pitch bends needed - for instance for most tunings to scales of fifteen notes or less and with a single voice, one can set all the pitch bends when Midi out is opened, or when the user changes the scale to retune to.
If your synth supports this method, pitch bends are not needed and you can have up to 128 simultaneous pitches just as you can have when using twelve equal, but set to any pitches you like..
When you apply a pitch bend to one of these synths, it retunes all the notes in play, so this is usually most useful for monophonic microtonal lines.

F12001 Vehicle Sound Engine Structure   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
On the other side, having the pitch range too small would mean that the original sound would be bent so little that as you increase in rpm the sound would hardly change and not sound like what you'd expect max rpm to sound like.
Regardless of the pitch range, the Natural of the sound is always played at this point (it's pitch is NOT effected by the pitch range, only the amount of pitch bend to get to the Min/Max values is effected).
Therefore the negative pitch bend (bend down in pitch) will be only 41.6/96th octave or roughly 5 semitones, and the positive pitch bend will only be roughly 1 semitone.

Using Pitch Bend while playing in Arranger KB Mode - Synth Zone BBS
Many of the principal soloing guitar notes (which benefit from pitch bend) occur 'right on' the chord changes, so I can't figure out how you guys are able have your left hand finger triggering the new chord and playing the pitch wheel 'at the same' time.
I almost always bend up but rarely more than to a whole step...I have been emulating guitar for so long that it is a natural task for me. I don't even think about it anymore..kind of a similar reflex response to driving with a clutch.
However, there is another issue that affects the usefulness of aftertouch for pitch bends, and that is the resolution of the aftertouch.

Pitch Bend data sent on current selected Element Midi Channel when Element Wheel is moved-the amount sent per click of wheel movement is determined by the Resolution set on the Wheel for Pitch Bend.
Try writing in Pitch Bend Events with a fine Resolution to very slowly alter the pitch of a sustaining string sound-Remember, this Channel Message can be written on one element to interact with the Notes on another if they share the same Midi Channel.

DESIGN FOR A MICROTONE AND BRAIN WAVE GENERATOR
The lower portion of the bend range (another 4096 bend units), used for bending pitches downward one semitone, was not used.
As mentioned earlier, one of the challenges of using Pitch Bend messages in microtuning is to keep the Pitch Bend message for one note from interfering with the Pitch Bend messages intended for another note.
The Pitch Bend values are calculated by dividing the number of repetitions by 128.

 pitch bend
The official MIDI documents specify 14 bit precision for pitch bend messages, sent in two bytes, each having 7 data bits and one data flag bit; however, the majority of manufacturers have not implemented 14 bit protocol in their MIDI equipment.
Although the 14 bit MIDI pitch bend standard is not in use by most manufacturers, a few do support it, and we may see more manufacturers supporting it in the future.
To get around this problem, a pitch bend data byte may be interpreted as having a 'directive bit' accompanied by data bits which refer directly to one of the two halfsteps spanned by the pitch bend message.

 Pitch Bend Problems...
One of these is the pitch bend range.
When this parameter is used, it allows the pitch bend range to vary from its default 2 semitones to up to 24 semitomes (a full octave) up and down.
If I set a pitch bend range for a full octave and the next sequence you play has the pitches with the normal 2 semi-tones, it will sound REALLY screwy.

Musical tone control signal generating apparatus for electronic musical instrument - Patent 4813327
In this state, the pitch of a key depressed at the keyboard unit 3 is offset higher or lower by an offset of the return position of the wheel 11 from the correct middle operation position MID.
When an electronic musical instrument is driven by a battery, if a power supply voltage varies, in particular, if a voltage is decreased and the operation element is located at a predetermined middle position, a signal derived from a variable resistor cooperating with the operation element cannot often have a correct signal level.
A pitch offset data register 25C stores pitch offset data POFFST representing an offset amount from the correct middle operation position MID at the pitch-bend volume 28 when a finger is released after the pitch-bend operation element 5 is operated toward the maximum or minimum operation positions MAX or MIN.

In the program editor, the pitch wheel can be disabled by going to the common page and setting the pitch bend parameter to 0 ct. I think there is also a parameter on the layers page to turn off the pitch wheel, for each layer - but I could be wrong.
Most synths have pitch bend wheels (or sticks) and are usually hard wired to alter the pitch when it is moved.
The pitch bends in the MIDI Scope window are really close together, but they keep coming constantly every few milliseconds and one thing is scary, when I pitch bend down my Kurz, he has a latency of half a second till he reaches the end pitch.

The so-called "pitch instability" some players encounter in this mode is a problem that is not inherent with the WX7, and it can be solved, once the designer's intentions are correctly understood.
You will see that, for normal pitch, "the reed is bitten against the flat area of the mouthpiece".
Let's be sure we understand: For reliable, predictable "pitch stability" when playing at normal pitch, the reed must be brought smack up against the flat area of the mouthpiece.

The way T2's Pitch Bend works seems to be different than most that I have seen.
The problem in my view is that if you assume that the pitch of both tracks are matched, the objective of Bending is to bring the two beats together in time...
Well, if the bend function is still changing the pitch value, you will overshoot (or undershoot as the case may be) the "lock point" and have to work to come back to it by releasing the Bend button and maybe hitting it a few more times.

The main disadvantage to using Pitch Bend is each simultaneous note, such as notes in a chord, must be assigned its own MIDI channel.
However almost all synths support Pitch Bend as well as some limited ability to set the Pitch Bend range; and once set all synths respond identically, so there is no problem in using different synths on the same piece.
Thus, the Pitch Bend Range must be set for each synth, and then each channel must be dedicated to a single music line.

But some sounds, when I'm holding a note with the sustain pedal the pitch bend won't affect it...
You can designate functions for the ribbon, pedals, etc. You can have some layers that bend up 2 notes, while others bend up 12 notes *at the same time* as well as the ribbon can act as a fader, slider, or whatever else you want.

Test your midi player and sound card / synth
Users of music keyboards will be familiar with the pitch bend wheel, which can bend the pitch of a note smoothly up and down.
Often they don't respond to the standard midi message to set the pitch bend range - either it has to be changed at the synth, or they have their own way of doing such things.
For instance, you may have an option to set the downward pitch bend range independently of the upward pitch bend range - and as that situation isn't covered by any of the standard midi messages, a soft synth that does that will probably require you to set it at the synth.
