Audio timescale-pitch modification - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Pitch scaling or pitch shifting is the reverse: the process of changing the pitch without affecting the speed.
A frequency shift, which is performed by amplitude modulation, does not preserve the ratios of the harmonic frequencies that determine the sound's timbre, and is not a "musical" transformation.
Similarly, a literal pitch scaling, in which the musical pitch is scaled (a higher note would be shifted at a greater interval than a lower note) is highly unusual, and not musical.

 Pitch shifts
When the pitch of a tone of constant frequency changes appreciably due to a change of intensity or on superposition of another sound, this is called a pitch shift.
The amount of pitch shifts and pitch deviations which may occur in normal-hearing persons is between 0 and plus/minus a few percent (in terms of equivalent frequency departure).
That is, a pitch shift induced by, e.g., a change in intensity may be either enhanced or compensated for by superposition of another sound of suitable type and intensity.

 The G-Force Pitch Shift
If a voice is pitch shifted higher than the dry signal it will appear brighter, and when bypassing the effect the dry sound will appear dull in contrast.
The simplest way to avoid this is to keep a relatively low level on the pitched voices, or pan them away from the dry sound in the stereo image.
The delay in the Intelligent Pitch deteriorates badly when you stop playing a note that's been delayed more than about 100ms (except when the Pitch Shift Voice is set to zero pitch shift or one octave).

This feedback of the vocal signal was shifted in pitch either up or down, with the duration of this shift systematically manipulated at 100 ms, 500 ms and 1000 ms.
When pitch shifts exceeding 500 ms in duration were presented, subjects' averaged responses appeared to consist of both an early and a late component.
In the present study, pitch-shift stimuli consisting of a disparity between voice F0 and feedback pitch of varying ramp onset velocities, were presented to subjects vocalizing a steady /ah/ sound to examine the effect of stimulus onset on voice F0 responses.

 Contralateral pitch shift
changes in perceived pitch when a tone's frequency is constant) are described which are produced by simultaneous contralateral interfering sounds (wide-band noise, tones, and narrow-band noise).
With narrow-band stimuli, shifts are confined to test tones with frequencies near those of the interfering stimulus.
It is conluded that the observed pitch shifts are dependent on interaction of the two ears at a level of neural processing which is preceded by separate frequency selective mechanisms.

In Fixed Grain Pitch mode, the amount of pitch shift specified at the start of a grain is used throughout its duration.
In Variable Grain Pitch mode, any changes in the amount of pitch shift are applied over the course of the grain as it is being generated.
Extra buffering is required if the pitch shift is to be modulated at audio rates so that it will increase within each grain.

French Horn Stopping -- Why the pitch shift?
When the "stopping mute" (or the hand, which the mute emulates) is inserted into the bell, the set of pitches produced for any given fingering is one semitone higher than it would be without the mute.
This would result in the pitch going up (which is what you'd expect, since the effective length of the vibrating tube is getting shorter).
The fl lines show the drop in pitch that occurs when the mute is inserted; the blue lines show the pitch rise that would happen if the phantom node could be pushed into the bell.

Essentially, i want to take arbitrary audio input and pitch shift it just a little bit, indeed very little - the shift should be so small as it would not even qualify as out-of-tune for most practical purposes (provided that the original sound is perfectly in-tune).
A shift not bigger than the usual tuning error of ordinary unplugged instruments.
I also need to vary the shift, not too fast (the pitch shifting modulator will change the shift up and down a couple times per second or less), but still change it dynamically.

The latter is scaled in percentage of the original pitch, so that is closer to a "physical", non-musical approach.
The "Semitone Shift" control has priority over the "Rate Shift" control in a way that if "Semitone Shift" is nonzero, it determines the amount of pitch shift in itself.
To create harmonies of a vocal track (simulating another vocalist singing the same thing a bit lower/higher), apply a pitch shift of 3 or 5 semitones to the track, and mix it to the original with a slightly lower volume.
