Battle - LoveToKnow 1911   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
BATTLE, a general engagement between the armed forces, naval or military, of enemies.
Battalia or batalia was used for the array of troops for battle, and hence was applied to the body of troops so arranged, or to a division of an army, whence the use of the word "battalion".
With "battle," in its usual meaning of a general engagement of hostile forces, are contrasted "skirmish," 1 a fight between small bodies ("skirmishing" technically means fighting by troops in extended or irregular order), and "action," a more or less similar engagement between large bodies of troops.

The battle was a quick and brutal one: The Necromancer sent forth a mighty Tomb Scorpion, but a summoned Plaguebearer kept it at bay for most of the battle, while the norsemen efficiently dealt with the rest of the skeleton soldiers.
The battle was a close one though, and nothing was decided until the very last close combat phase, when a trio of Ghouls managed to cut down the last of the Dregling Knights, while Aamakk Dregl failed a break test against leadership 7 and fled from a Spirit Host.
The battle was close in the early and mid-game, but things took a turn for the worse when the expensive Warriors of Nurgle failed a crucial panic test and fled the battle.

Pitched battle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A pitched battle is a battle where both sides choose to fight at a chosen location and time and where either side has the option to disengage either before the battle starts, or shortly after the first armed exchanges.
For example the Battle of Edgehill was the first pitched battle of the First English Civil War and the Battle of Gettysburg started by chance as a skirmish, but as both generals chose to reinforce their positions instead of disengaging, they turned a skirmish into a pitched battle.

The Great Cylon Turkey Shoot is an initially pitched battle where a compromised battlestar Galactica turns the Cylons' own computer virus against them to completely power down a massive fleet of hundreds of Raiders and Heavy Raiders.
The presence of numerous Heavy Raiders (troop transport vessels, never before seen in such numbers) suggests that the Cylons intended to board Galactica and possibly other ships in the Colonial fleet after the virus had rendered the battlestar helpless.
According to Ron D. Moore's podcast for "Flight of the Phoenix", this battle was specifically inspired by the "Great Marianas Turkey Shoot" of World War II.

DRF: Pitched battle over NYRA signal - Horse Racing - MSNBC.com
The monthlong battle between a group of mid-Atlantic tracks and the New York Racing Association over the rights to broadcast and take bets on races from Belmont Park is the product of long-simmering tensions among competing account-wagering companies, according to interviews with racing officials involved in the dispute.
Tracks that belong to a group called the MidAtlantic Cooperative dropped the Belmont signal on Sept. 15, blocking fans in Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Massachusetts, Virginia, West Virginia, and New Hampshire from betting on the region's most popular races and costing the tracks involved millions of dollars in simulcast fees and purse revenues.
That battle, increasingly fought out by lobbyists and lawmakers, has paradoxically limited the choices of mid-Atlantic horseplayers at a time when account wagering is becoming more widely available and reliable.
