Two pithoi, one Archaic and the other a LM IIIC heirloom, (47) along with two groundstone tools (handstones), were found on the floor surface against the northern wall of the eastern room (Fig.
The pithoi are fragmentary and were found smashed amid burned clay and ashy soil.
The pithoi in the east room were evidently crushed and scattered during a fiery destruction that seems to have consumed the site late in the sixth century.

In Minoan civilization the large storage jars were known as pithoi.
These many handled jars were used mainly for the storage of oils or grains.
However, during the protopalatial period of Minoan civilization a new style of burial developed in which the body was placed in a large storage jar or pithos.

He asserts that when the pithoi and the stand are looked at together, it becomes clear that there was a common belief that Yahweh had a consort among the people of Israel.
This view refutes the idea that the asherah may have lost its meaning as a consort godess by the time of the northern kingdom and that ft term was now only used for the tree-like cultic symbol that at one time represented her.

In room 24, 11 pithoi were recovered while room 32 contained at least a dozen of pithoi, certainly for oil storage, but as Blegen (supra:158) has argued must have been a special refined type, since the storage jars were distinctly smaller than those in the other oil magazines.
Finally, another 16 pithoi were found in the ‘North Oil Magazine’ ranged around all four sides of the room.

A British wholesaler, 'Pots and Pithoi' (P&P) have a large number of these pots in stock, and we were able to choose several different types of greater or lesser similarity, and to get several examples of each type.
A scatterplot of the first two principal components did not show such marked clustering for the pithoi as that for the amphorae, but still suggested that clustering was present.
The same analysis was repeated using all 51 of the pots together in order to establish whether the method would separate out the two major types and whether the allocation to clusters would be the same as when the major types were considered separately.

The popularity of EH II and III pithoi bands from the Argolid impressed by similar cylinders is startling.
Some pithoi bands impressed by cylinders with linear patterns do come from the House of the Tiles, but they seem to reflect a decorative, not a sphragistic practice.
And if the absence of such stamps in the earlier Lerna III implies that sphragistic seals supplanted the decorative seals, then the presence of the decorative seals in Lerna IV may imply that bureaucratic sealing was then no longer practiced.

Troy VII and the Historicity of the Trojan War
These pithoi were sealed at the top by stone slabs, but the presence of the pits occasionally so weakened the floor that in one case the floor appears actually to have collapsed as a direct result.
This is the reason for the subterranean placement of the numerous pithoi of Troy VIIa: they are not evidence for siege so much as they are testimony to the dramatic decrease in floorspace of the average Trojan dwelling from Troy VIh to Troy VIIa.
The preoccupation of this population with storage space as attested by the subterranean pithoi has been further interpreted to reflect a state of siege at the end of Troy VIIa.

Before we could excavate the pass of 17-1-2-4, all at once, we had to remove our first feature of our trench, which was a circular packing of pithoi, tile, stone and ceramic.
Since there was tile, ceramic and stone mixed in with the pithoi sherds, we believed that we were not looking at a collapsed pithoi.
Since we also did not find any seeds or carbon pockets imbedded within the feature, we came to the conclusion that the pithoi sherds were used as a sort of rubble packing as well as other ceramic sherds, tile and stone.

Chemical analysis indicates that LMLK pithoi were manufactured with clay that can be identified with the Jerusalem region, & their ware greatly resembles the inscribed GBON handles excavated from Gibeon.
