Gordion Excavations Project: Early Hellenistic Pithos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Ethnographic studies of traditional potters in the Aegean and Mediterranean both support this view and show that pithos producers are often specialists.
This pithos was found buried to its rim in the courtyard of a early Hellenistic house at Gordion, used perhaps to store grain.
The pithos was fired in an oxidizing atmosphere, perhaps in a kiln, yielding a buff surface with a grey core (see photos).

On one side of Pithos A or 1 there is a picture of a tree with branches of lotus blossoms.
On the other side of Pithos 1 is a picture of a cow with her calf, a male and female standing with cow-like faces, and a seated female playing a lyre.
Over their heads is a Hebrew inscription that says, "Utterance of Ashyaw the king: Say to Yehallel and to Yaw'asah and to...: I bless you by Yahweh of Samaria and his asherah" (Context Of Scripture (COS) edited by William Hallo 2.47A, 171).

They comprise a small two-handled pithos, a large conical bowl which turned out to have two bands of thick white paint on the outside and further paint on the base and handles, and two large flat lids with single handles.
These coarse vessels were hand-made, all but the pithos being fired at a fairly low temperature.
The large bowl was smoothed to a burnish on the inside, the pithos and the lids on the outside.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 2006.07.16
There are well known gaps in Hesiod's account of Pandora scattering the contents of a pithos with only Elpis remaining, i.e., in the upshot of Zeus's punishment for Prometheus's impudence, and this uncertainty is one reason for a great variety in understandings of the overall myth.
He then approves a construal given most recently by Neitzel: the pithos was an ordinary jar of provisions, which Pandora spilled so as to leave humans to hunger and the diseases that hunger makes possible, with elpis (personification only figurative) the hope for new provisions.
I want to say finally that there are implications to M. only analyzing the pithos among the myth's scholarly controversies in part 1, be this construed as a criticism or as a suggestion for further research.

Boats and Ships - The Cypro-Mycenaean wreck at Point IRIA   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Over the ensuing decades progress in Aegean and Cypriot prehistory was to enable a definitive identification of the wreck assemblage, but in the meantime the importance of the Iria shipwreck remained sealed beneath the sand.
The site was then identified by the large pithos fragments and a completely intact pithos, which were photographed in situ by Nikos Tsouchlos.
Photos of the exposed finds and predominantly the intact pithos were taken for examination, but the wreck could not be dated with certainty.

A pithos stand was found in the southwest corner of the room and a fragmentary pithos—the neck and rim—against the east wall just north of the doorway.
A single worked limestone block forms a small bench, seat or work platform in the northwest corner of the room, utilizing a rise in the bedrock at this location for its foundation.
Other finds in the room include a set of five ground stone tools, including a small quern, a pithos base, a strainer (set against the southwest post base), a fine cup, a coarse skyphos, and a large lekane with reflex handles.

On the top of Stratum 4, we found the remains of a pithos (a very large ceramic vessel meant for storage).
This would seem to indicate that either something burned inside the pithos, or something that was already burnt was placed inside it.
It seems likely that these seeds were at one time stored in one or more of these pithos type vessels and were subsequently burnt during the destruction of the site.

The pithos contained large rocks, an amphora neck (SD 18), an amphora base (SD 17), a lead fishing weight (SD 22), and, significantly for the understanding of wreck formation processes, two sherds of SD 6 and SD 8, both amphoras of the same type.
Bass mentions “large sherds and a handle identical to those of pithos SD 10” lying in 2 or 3 m of water and heavily concreted to the rocky bottom between the site and the shore.
He states that the sand in the area of the main concentration was deep enough to have preserved at least some of the timber, had the hull gone straight to the bottom with the cargo.

I have attempted to identify the motifs appearing on Pithos A as being from several strands, the Queen of Heaven cult from Mesopotamia of Inanna and Ishtar, and the Baal-Adad/Anath cult of Canaan (preserved in the Ugaritic myths), and Egyptianizing features like the feathered headdresses appearing on full-frontal bovine heads of Hathor.

One example is found on pithos A at Kuntillet Ajrud.
As mentioned before, one side of this pithos contains text linking Yahweh to "his asherah." On the other side of this pithos, an image of a stylized tree with two ibexes is depicted, with a lion underneath.
While the text is not associated with the image, some scholars have tried to connect the two, saying that the asherah in the blessing is being depicted in the images (Meshel, 1979).

Of great interest to us, was that her vessel was a pithos, or honey-vase, from which she poured out blessings.
One could see that if there were angry bees also enclosed in the pithos, one might find oneself suffering the pain of their revenge, while still having hope that the honey could be consumed!
