Often, the multi-port averaging Pitot tube is an appropriate and economic choice as the primary element for measuring liquids, gases or steam.
The Pitot tube is a “square root device,” meaning the square root of the DP is proportional to the flow rate.
Among the reasons for this are percent blockage of the probe in the pipe and shedding vortices that cause a suctioning effect at the downstream static pressure ports, producing a larger measured DP than the theoretically predicted value.

Pitot tube - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Pitot (pronounced pē-tó) tube is a measuring instrument used to measure fluid flow velocity, and more specifically, used to determine airspeed on aircraft.
The Pitot tube is named after its inventor, Henri Pitot, and was modified to its modern form by Henry Darcy.
Pitot tubes on aircraft commonly have heating elements to prevent the tube from becoming clogged with ice.

Henri Pitot - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Henri Pitot (May 3, 1695 – December 27, 1771) was a French hydraulic engineer and the inventor of the Pitot tube, which measures flow velocity.
Beginning his career as a mathematician and astronomer, Pitot won election to the Academy of Sciences in 1724.
He became interested in the problem of flow of water in rivers and canals and discovered that much contemporary theory was erroneous— for example, the idea that the velocity of flowing water increases with depth.

USING A PITOT STATIC TUBE FOR VELOCITY AND FLOW RATE MEASUREMENT
The Pitot Static tube measures the total pressure (or impact pressure) at the nose of the Pitot tube and the static pressure of the gas stream at side ports.
When selecting a Pitot Static tube to be used in conjunction with the FKT Series (or any manometer for that matter), it is necessary to select a tube with a constant close to unity, if errors in velocity are to be avoided.
Ensure that the Pitot Static tube is aligned with the axis of the duct using the alignment guide on the tube as a reference.

Due to the extreme weather conditions experienced at the summit of Mount Washington, both the pitot-static probe and mounting assembly are heated to prevent the formation of ice on the probe assembly.
The pitot probe measures the total pressure (static pressure + dynamic pressure) caused by the air flow coming to a halt at the opening of the pitot probe (the pressure builds up at the tip of the pitot probe because there is no air flow through the pitot probe).
Generally the pitot-static tube is directed into the wind by the wind vane which is a part of the assembly, but since the angle of the probe is fixed to the horizon, air flowing up across the nose of the probe may not provide an accurate reading of wind speed.
