Many of the features found in the speech of Pittsburghers are popularly thought to be unique to the city, as is reflected in the term "Pittsburghese," the putative sum of these features in the form of a dialect.
However, few of these features are restricted solely to Pittsburgh or the Pittsburgh metropolitan area, but instead are found throughout southwestern Pennsylvania, the North Midland dialect region, the Midland dialect region, or even large parts of the United States (Johnstone, Bhasin, and Wittkofski, 2002; Wisnosky 2003; Johnstone and Baumgardt, 2004).

Pittsburgh Public School teachers are paid well relative to their peers, ranking 17th in 2000-2001 among the 100 largest cities by population for the highest minimum salary offered to teachers with a BA ($34,300).
Pittsburgh, as well as Baltimore, Maryland, also have a special relationship with the city of Karmiel, and the neighboring region of Misgav, in Israel, as a part of the Partnership 2000 program.

Spanish has overtaken the European languages of Pittsburgh's past and become the second most-spoken language in the city, according to an organization that wants English to be the national language.
The relatively low local number for Spanish compared to English reflects a demographic shift, rather than the sort of immigration boom that swelled Pittsburgh's ranks as recently as the 1970s and '80s when Soviet Jews sought refuge in the area, said Sky Foerster, president of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh.
U.S. English Foundation spokesman Rob Toonkel said his group is lobbying to make English the national language, and to increase the amount of federal money that is devoted to primary and adult English education.

After working in ESL in the Bay Area, I spent ten years teaching English in Japan, the first five in Sendai, in the northeastern area called Tohoku, and the last five in Tokyo, at the University of Pittsburgh’s English Language Institute Japan Program.
I’ve co-authored two ESL textbook series, English Firsthand (Longman) and Active Listening (Cambridge University Press) and edited a twelve-book ESL textbook series, Journeys, for Prentice Hall.
