Pittsfield is the birthplace of TV actor Ryan Carnes and the two-time Illinois state wrestling champion, John Wise.
Pittsfield, along with the bulk of Pike County, is located in the land between the Illinois and Mississippi rivers as they move toward convergance in St. Louis.

William Grimshaw was one of the founders of the Illinois Republican Party and a delegate to the 1847 Constitutional Convention.
He then came to Illinois, then the far west, upon the responsible errand of locating and paying taxes on the large body of land owned by his father, comprising many quarter sections of the bounty lands in the northern counties of the military tract.
On the 25th of November, 1833, he was licensed to practice as all attorney and counselor at law in all the Courts of law and equity in the state of Illinois by Samuel D. Lockwood and William Wilson, justices of the supreme court of the state of Illinois.

During today's hearing, Clopper admitted she embezzled no less than $239,900 from the Kinderhook State Bank in Kinderhook, Illinois, during the period from October 11, 1994 to May 23, 2001.
Clopper admitted that while she was employed as the bank's chief teller, she fraudulently credited her various personal accounts and then created fraudulent "cash in" memos to her teller drawer.

Many construed the language of the Northwest Ordinance as protecting property in slaves already in the territory and in all of their descendants as well, a construction that would have made slavery permanent notwithstanding the seemingly clear dictate of the ordinance to the contrary.
By 1820, Illinois included more than seven hundred slaves, and in N. Dwight Harris's judgment, "Slavery existed in the territory of Illinois as completely as in any of the Southern States" and was practiced as far north as Sangamon County, then in the early stages of settlement.
