Pittwater Council is a Local Government Area on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, in the state of New South Wales, Australia.
The Pittwater shire was named after an estuary of Broken Bay which the shire surrounds, Broken Bay forms the mouth of the Hawkesbury River, the main river which formed the Cumberland Plain and Sydney basin.
Pittwater, being one of a number of arms leading off the main Hawkesbury river coastal inlet of Broken Bay, was formed as a drowned river valley after sea levels rose due to the last ice age.

Pittwater is an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of New South Wales.

The seat was famously held by New South Wales Opposition Leader John Brogden from 1996 until his resignation in 2005, but was lost in the resulting by-election when then-Mayor of Pittwater Council, Alex McTaggart, defeated Liberal candidate Paul Nicolau in a landslide.

However the council was far from united on the levy, with Crs Natalie Stevens and Rex Butler speaking strongly against the proposal.
As a Pittwater Council ratepayer, I object to an application to you by Pittwater Council for approval to introduce a 5% "environmental infrastructure levy" on ratepayers for the next 7 years, on the basis that it is just another name for a rate increase to undertake normal Council works.
Council's proposal for a rate increase, under the name of an "environmental infrastructure levy" should be refused, and Pittwater Council be advised to plan its activities within the pegged rate increases allowed.

Pittwater is situated on the East Australian Coast approx.
Pittwater's eastern shores form an outer suburban area of Sydney (15 miles or 24 km south).
Pittwater is entered between Barrenjoey Head and West Head, the NE extremity of Lambert Peninsula, 1¼ miles W. A bar, with a depth of 2.7 m (9ft) in the fairway, extends across the entrance, but within there are depths of 12.8 to 18.3 m (42 to 60 ft).

The Council argument in support of the proposal is based on an assessment that a “significant number” of people who use the wharves are not residents (ie, ratepayers) of Pittwater.
Council has claimed that it is prepared to “fund and/or support those wharves which provide a direct benefit specifically aimed at its ratepayers”, but it appears that if the facilities are also used by a ‘significant number” of non-ratepayers, then they are no longer Council responsibility.
Pittwater residents are urged to write to local Councillors pointing out that many Pittwater ratepayers are boaters, that the wharves are used by locals, and they are an important part of the amenity of the area.

Pittwater Council recently offered the Microsoft Office Specialist assessment tool for Microsoft Word to 15 of its staff, and were impressed by the results.
With the assessment process undertaken, Pittwater Council is now in the process of getting their staff to undertake training in the areas that are needed.

The council has developed a system that is seeing staff carry hand-held computers in the field that can be used to take inquiries quickly as well as enter and process data in a fraction of the time it used to take, slashing the amount of paper work involved.

It is understood at least 150 developments across Pittwater, Warringah, Manly, Ku-ring-gai, North Sydney and Woollahra council areas were certified by Mr Diacono after his accreditation expired on November 15, 2001 and he failed to renew it.
The general manager of Pittwater Council, Angus Gordon, said the council had started to receive complaints in September 2002 about developments for which Mr Diacono was the building certifier.
The council was waiting for advice from the department before owners would be contacted, but the case raised some unique dilemmas.

Pittwater Council is considering a proposal that ratepayers pay an environmental infrastructure levy of 5% per annum for the next seven years, on top of their rates.
Councils normally do those kinds of environmental works and that's what we ratepayers pay them to do.
It is only Pittwater ratepayers who are being asked to make this additional payment on top of their existing rate payments - for the next seven years.

Pittwater Council will receive support from the Environment Protection Authority's Beachwatch program to get extra information on swimming water quality this summer, following a $25,600 grant.
Environment Minister Bob Debus said the Council was one of fourteen receiving a grant to take part in the pilot program to improve or extend the highly successful Beachwatch scheme.
"Council will use part of the $25,600 grant to test the quality at Palm Beach Ocean Pool, McCarrs Creek Reserve, Narrabeen Lagoon and Billarong Reserve this summer, which are not currently tested in the Beachwatch program.

The council expects that the sale of the land will raise between $15 million and $15.5 million, the majority of which will be used to buy and outfit a new depot.
I congratulate Pittwater Council for saving this important piece of land, which is located on the foreshores of Pittwater.
I urge Pittwater Council to use the $1.5 million to $2 million that will be left over from the sale and redevelopment of Winnererremy Bay to move forward on this matter.

Beaches on Pittwater also would be affected, with the council to investigate whether smoking bans could be enforced at community events.
In coming weeks the council would look at the legal issues surrounding such a ban and ways to enforce it, she said.

Pittwater Council has appliced to the Federal Government, under the referral process of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, to have the Minister judge whether Pittwater's most important wetland area should be re-designated as part of the existing onshore dog exercise park at Careel Bay.
In 1999, Pittwater Council recognised Careel Bay, like the other wetland areas remaining in Sydney, as an environmentally sensitive and important area requiring protection and management.
The existing environment acts as a silt-stabiliser and fish nursery and is essential to the ecology of Pittwater and nearby coastal waterways.
