The group was simply a duo of Marc Bolan (vocals, guitar, ex-John's Children) and Steve Peregrine Took (vocals, bongos, Chinese gong, assorted percussion, Pixiephone) and their music was largely acoustic (exclusively so on the first 2 albums).
Peaking the UK hippy trip, they wandered through their musical terrain of magic, mystics, elves, witches, with Bolan's ethereal vocals sung in a voice that on occasion could not be proven to have any relation to the English language.
Similar in style to the first album, again with just Bolan (guitars, vocals) and Took (bongos, vocals, African talking drums, assorted percussion, kazoo, Pixiephone and Chinese gong).

 Arts | Mickey Finn
Marc now played electric guitar more frequently in concert, and soon the group was augmented by bass player Steve Currie and drummer Bill Legend.
On stage and on record, Finn played a wide variety of percussion instruments, from Moroccan clay drums, tabla and finger cymbals to pixiephone and bongo drums.
The evolution from acoustic to electric band was marked by a shortening of the group's name to T Rex.

Took was Bolan's translator, turning his words into audio signals to trigger off mental pictures in a tripped-out audience.
In Tyrannosaurus Rex, Steve Took contributed backing vocals, drums, bongos, African drums, kazoo, pixiephone; Chinese gong and in later stages some bass guitar.
While still in Tyrannosaurus Rex, Bolan refused to let the duo perform any of Took's songs, so he took two of them to Twink.

 T. Rex (band) - Everything on T. Rex (band) (information, latest news, articles,...)
The combination of Bolan's guitar and cat-like wail with Steve Took's bongos and assorted percussion (often including such children's instruments as the Pixiephone) gained them a devoted following on a thriving underground scene that included the Incredible String Band.
Disc jockey John Peel befriended the band and ferried them to and from gigs in his mini; he later appeared on record with them, reading stories written by Bolan.
Another key pairing was with producer Tony Visconti, who went on to produce all of their albums well into their second phase.

Dusted Features [ Destined: Feathers ]
A variety of noisemakers, from traditional to exotic, are employed to achieve Feathers unique tonalities.
Acoustic guitars, electric bass, autoharp, "pixiephone" mountain dulcimer, toy piano, sitar, Indian banjo, recorder, violin, birdcall, hooves, "hair drum" and "shoe on stick" comprise only a partial list of Feathers' aural arsenal.
The resulting sound is far less cacophonous than you might expect; the group's patient arrangements and thematic evolutions betray a deliberateness not commonly found among their neo-folk peers.

Review - Marc Bolan And T. Rex: 20th Century Superstar
Sparse musically, but still incredibly engaging was the duo of Marc Bolan on lead vocals and acoustic guitar, and Steve Perregrine-Took on bongos, vocals, African Talking Drum, "pixiephone" and vocals.
Unfortunately he choked to death on a cherry after a dose of magic mushrooms numbed all sensation in his throat in 1980.
The next album, simply titled T. Rex showed a shortened name change, and Bolan then added fulltime bassist Steve Currie and drummer Bill Legend to the group.

Sam Ulwards Album Reviews : T. Rex
In 1967 Tyrannosaurus Rex were the way he felt he could best achieve this, after a couple of failed solo efforts, and a stint in Johns Children (which was never going to work as Bolan clearly needed to be the main man).
He strode forward forming this acoustic duo alongside a practically silent partner in the shape of Steve Peregrine Took who handled (at least on this album) Bongo's, Chinese Gong, Assorted Percussion and Pixiephone !!!.
He christened them with an attention grabbing, media friendly name and early albums had equally commanding titles.

Like the previous cd (mine are cdrs, but I assume there are published official cds), we have miniature, magical pieces on harp, or with various multi-track harps and a bit of echo, handshakers, wood, and other small percussion, here and there some water and glockenspiel, mixed more often with the droning Indian tanpura.
