While the Pixies were touted as the band to bring indie rock into the mainstream, they simply laid the groundwork for the alternative explosion of the early '90s.
During the spring of 1992, the Pixies opened for U2 on the opening leg of the Zoo TV tour; it would be their last trek through the United States.
Soon after, it was confirmed that the Pixies would reunite in 2004 for U.S. tours in the spring and fall; an appearance at that year's Coachella festival; and gigs in Europe and the U.K. that summer, including performances at the T in the Park, Roskilde, Pinkpop, and V festivals.

The Pixies hit the Big Easy stage a second time to an even more wild response than their initial entrance.
But the Pixies entered the stage after Seattle's Alien Crime Syndicate to a wave of joy: people were seeing one of their favorite bands finally, and I bet most for the first time.
The Pixies played just like they never were gone: enjoying themselves, giving each other little smirks, giving little comments to each other and laughing.

Pixies (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Pixies found only modest success in their home country, but were significantly more successful in the United Kingdom and elsewhere in Europe, although never achieving mainstream success with their studio albums.
It nearly landed the band a mimed appearance on the TV chat show Wogan, which was mocked in the video to the song.
The Pixies were at the height of their popularity, however, and while headlining at the Reading Festival in 1990, they played a highly enthusiastic version of "Debaser" which has become legendary among fans.

Music preview: The Pixies - Salon
"Pixies" is the first official release of the indie rock band's 1987 demo tape (known among bootleggers as the "purple tape") that got them their first record deal.
Fans came to know of it as the hard-to-find "purple tape." That demo got the Pixies a deal with record label 4AD, which used eight of the tracks for the band's debut EP "Come on Pilgrim," released that same year, yet the original versions of the nine other songs have existed only as bootlegs.
While bigger budgets later afforded the Pixies the luxury of a denser, more determined sound, this collection of early material nicely demonstrates the band's energy and the scope of their musical ambition.

The Pixies convened to record their first full-length album, Surfer Rosa, with producer Steve Albini, who had pioneered the thin, abrasive indie-guitar grind with Big Black.

The Pixies - PopMatters Concert Review
That said, over the past decade, the Pixies have become far more popular than they were in their heyday, a fact driven home by the unprecedented demand for tickets when the band announced their spring "warm up" tour, as every show sold out quickly, many in mere minutes.
As the band tried to make names for themselves on their own, the Pixies' work continued to grow in stature, aided by the compilation Death to the Pixies, the odd appearance of a song in a well-known movie (Fight Club, for instance), and word-of mouth that continued long after the break-up.
The band is starting to find its groove, proof that these four individuals are in it for the long haul, and by the time the band launches its full-scale tour this fall, they should be firing on all cylinders.

 Artist Histories
A deliberate switch from the complacency of contemporary bands sticking snugly to easily classified sounds and genres, the Pixies sound took the tenets of indie ideology at face value, creating a sound impossible to pin down to a single style.
The Pixies drew on wide-ranging influences when developing their style, from the complexly layered distortion of Husker Du and Buzzcocks to the simple arrangements and harmonies of folk rock, though classic surf sounds, from the Ventures to the Beach Boys, form the groundwork for the band’s compositions.
Unlike punk’s outright rage or the menacing aura of metal, the Pixies’ sound invokes not riots nor devil-worship, but an uneasy familiarity with the paranormal, a cold murky world creeping in the corners of their listeners’ imaginations.

The Pixies were one of the most influential American alternative rock bands of the late '80s.
But the band were inventive, rabid rock fans that turned conventions inside out, melding punk and indie guitar rock, classic pop, surf rock, and stadium-sized riffs with singer/guitarist Black Francis' bizarre, fragmented lyrics about space, religion, sex, mutilation, and pop culture.
The band released 5 albums from 1987 to 1991, and then returned to release Death to the Pixies in 1997, and The Complete B Sides in 2001.

It's often the case that early demos provide a snapshot of a band's creative genesis but here are the Pixies--Black Francis's jeepers-creepers vocals and the trademark surf-gone-trash-horror narratives of theophobia, familial perversion and grisly personal injury--in fully grown glory.
The Pixies, a band that have heavyily influenced a great deal of musicians ('its hard to think where nirvana would have been without the pixies to draw influence from'.) have put together a continued documentry of they're first demos to songs which were released later on they're following 4 albums.
Dubbed by the pixies hard core fans as 'the purpe tape' recordings this album includes the orginal version of 'here comes your man' which later went on to become a hit single when it was recorded for the doolittle c.d and the only 'in heaven (lady in the radiator song)' studio version.

The Pixies were initially together for just six years (1986-92), and although they were revered in Europe and opened stadium tours for U2, they remained in the then-small alternative-rock ghetto in the States.

Except that this band is the reason for my first picking up a guitar 13 years ago (and, I might argue, for my improving little since).
Not *too* much anyway: On the subject of covers, the Pixies did two: (1) "Winterlong," by Neil Young, which Black Francis once said was the best thing the Pixies ever recorded, and (2) a crazy re-arrangement of an already crazy song, "In Heaven," written by David Lynch and Peter Ivers for the movie Eraserhead.
The songs a band covers says a lot about them, and David Lynch plus Neil Young captures the Pixies awfully well.
