Pixilation at opensource encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Pixilation (from pixilated) is a technique where real actors are used in an animated film, by repeatedly posing while one or more frame is taken and changing pose slightly before the next frame or frames.
Pixilated also means affected by pixies, or bewitched (a pixie is a kind of sprite or elf).
This is not the same as pixelization where an image is blurred by displaying part or all of it at a lower resolution.

AD 221 - Animation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The fundamental aspect of pixilation is the use of human motion within the animation.
To achieve a normal paced movement but have the pixilation look, 10 or 15 fps could be used (perhaps even 5 or 6, but this is often too choppy).
pixilation excels at presenting things in a believable way that are otherwise unbelievable - floating people, sliding people, moving objects.

To the naked eye there is no pixilation or tonal stepping visible in a continuous tone image.
This "trick" has been employed by the printing industry for a long time, and is only now beginning to be challenged by a new process (possible with computer image processing) called stochastic screening.

"Pixilation" (nice new word!), aka electronic "boxing", is used by prudish or politically correct producers because they're ignorant of the fact that it can easily be negated by a simple trick of the eyes.
Next time you see a pixilated face (or any other interesting anatomical part) on TV, hold up and look at your thumb (aligned with the screen)about ten inches in front of your eye.
Unlike pixilation, "patching" cannot be overridden by throwing your eye out of focus (Rats!) or even, so far as I know, by electronic intervention.

Richard Leader: Bargain Bin Review: FSAA
While "pixilated" has become a catchall term for this in the vernacular, "pixilation" actually refers to a variety of phenomena.
For example, one kind of "pixilation" (as it is commonly used) refers to imperfections in JPG pictures on the internet, which appear due to how they are compressed to make for shorter download times.
Likewise, pixels are often too large to accurately display many details in computer games--that is what happens when you try to represent curves, waves, diagonal lines, and all sorts of shapes using nothing but small squares (as pixels get smaller at high resolutions, this problem is diminished as well).

The methodology behind pixilation varies per space, but it’s more often than not mathematical.
I’ll determine just how long I’ll want the journey through a space to be in time, and then divide that out based on an approximation of the distance.
For a lot of the pixilation in "Met State," it was divided into eight step increments.

Pixilation animates human bodies in the same way that puppets or drawings are worked on in stop motion animation.
Despite the level of control inherent in most forms of animation, the attributes of pixilation often lie with elements of chance and accident, especially when it comes to nature.
It’s the final image you see in the film.” With pixilation, the environment is more than just a background to the action, at times having a life of its own: “You end up with inanimate objects coming to life...there’s an energy that fills every image and it comes through in the colour saturation as well.

Interview with Filmmaker Bryan Papciak, "Met State," from 2003 Sundance Online Film Festival, 5/03
Papciak: It was all shot with a 16mm Bolex and the main technique used is called pixilation, where you move the camera instead of objects in front of the camera.
It’s so huge and overwhelming that there’s no way to capture the feel of it, but pixilation was one way of giving a kind of high velocity tour.
All the film was mysterious to me until I decided to use the pixilation as a way to map it and understand it, and I think it gives a skewed perspective that’s particularly pertinent in a mental institution.
