Pizzicato is a method of playing a bowed string instrument by plucking the strings with the fingers, rather than using the bow.
More rarely, pizzicato may be employed in the playing of the piano and other strung keyboard instruments, as one of the variety of techniques involving direct manipulation of the strings known collectively as "string piano".
This is sometimes known as the Bartók pizzicato (or colloquially as "slapping" or "snap pizzicato"), after one of the first composers to use it extensively.

If a violinist or violist has to play pizzicato for a long period of time, they may put down their bow, hold the instrument in the "banjo position" (resting horizonally on the lap), and pluck the strings with the thumb of the right hand.
This is sometimes known as the Bartok pizzicato, after one of the first composers to use it extensively.
A left hand pizzicato is usually indicated by writing a small cross above the note, and a Bartok pizzicato is often indicated by a circle with a small vertical line through the top of it above the note in question.

Pizzicato Five (often P5), a Japanese pop group best known to audiences in the west in their later incarnation as a duo of Nomiya Maki (野宮真貴) and Konishi Yasuharu (小西康陽).
In 1987, Pizzicato Five released their first album, "Couples." It was a commercial failure, and the record company began pressuring the band to find a new lead singer.
In June of the same year, Pizzicato Five released the album "Bossa Nova 2001." Produced by fellow Shibuya-scenester Cornelius, it which reached number seven on the charts.
