  Encyclopedia: Pkgsrc
Pkgsrc is in a freeze to prepare for the 2005Q2 branch.
Pkgsrc is a set of package descriptions and build instructions that is totally self-contained, and allows users to compile software from source or download and install binary packages from a consistent interface.
Pkgsrc was designed from the ground up to include support for multiple operating systems and architectures, so it seemed a natural decision to join up with a team that was eager to cooperate and offer assistance.

Pkgsrc - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The NetBSD package system, pkgsrc (package source), is a framework for building third-party software on NetBSD and other UNIX-like operating systems, based on a system of makefiles.
pkgsrc has built-in support for handling dependencies on third-party libraries and other packages, such as pthreads or the X Window System, and extended features such as IPv6 support on a range of platforms.
Since their 1.4 release, DragonFly BSD also uses pkgsrc as their official packaging system (announcement).

Pkgsrc is originally based on the FreeBSD ports system and is similar to Gentoo Linux's package building and installation system.
Pkgsrc is primarily maintained and developed by the NetBSD project.
Pkgsrc can be used to install third-party or add-on software using consistent tools, configurations, and install locations in a diverse network.

Pkgsrc can be used to deploy binary only packages from vendors and to build packages from source for any target architecture.
Pkgsrc and its relatives on the other BSDs have been used for nearly a decade by thousands of developers to solve many of the deployment and configuration problems facing us today.
There is a high degree of synergy between pkgsrc and autoconf, because large parts of pkgsrc were developed to assist in installation of software products developed under autoconf.

Using the NetBSD Packages Collection (pkgsrc) on DragonFlyBSD | goBSD   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Another technical advantage gained by using pkgsrc is the ability to have binary packages that are signed by the distributer.
Since pkgsrc was built from the ground up to be available on a wide range of systems, porting it to DragonFly-ia32 was a simple process.
The top level of pkgsrc is a directory structure to sort packages into categories, and every second level directory is an actual package.

Pkgsrc does not overwrite configurations on package installations (and default configurations also available in examples directory).

I'm not suggesting that pkgsrc is the end-all-be-all of packaging systems, but I think it will be the most beneficial start.
Since pkgsrc uses a make system very similar to ports, most developers will feel immediately at home, and be able to develop quickly and make great progress on our platform.

pkgsrc - The NetBSD packages collection
pkgsrc was originally developed for NetBSD, but now also has support for other platforms.
This should work fine, though since pkgsrc is being continually updated it is usually preferable to download the most recent copy from the 'Net.
You can then see what packages are available, along with a short (one-line) comment about the function of the package, and a pointer to a fuller description, by using a browser like lynx (see pkgsrc/www/lynx) or something like Mozilla (pkgsrc/www/mozilla), or communicator.

As you may already know, pkgsrc is a packaging system that works on many different operating systems — not just NetBSD.
pkgsrc will work fine on most Linux distributions, but IMHO, there are some that are more pkgsrc-friendlier than others (basically because their original packaging system may be limited).
First of all, there is (or was, since the homepage seems to be dead) Bluewall GNU/Linux, which claimed to be a distribution including pkgsrc as its default packaging system.

Restrictions ------------ The PKGSRC tool uses a convention that must be followed for the tool to be successful.
The success of automating the re-making of your changes to a new version is highly dependent on what the vendor does to the source and what you bracketed.
The PKGSRC tool is not a perfect solution, but if used correctly, you should be able to automate most of the re-making of changes.

Pkgsrc's base configuration file for Solaris (...pkgsrc/mk/platform/SunOS.mk) specifies that, for compatibility reasons, the /usr/xpg4 versions of certain Sun commands must be used if bootstrapping or compiling happens to call upon them.
However, another common method for bringing up a pkgsrc build system is to employ a base binary "bootstrap kit".
Although pkgsrc and portage (by gentoo.org) are often referred to as "from-source" distros, they have full support for binary package management as well (installing, updating, etc.).

To use the binary packages, pkgsrc needs to be bootstr apped (or a binary bootstrap kit installed), and the pkgs can be installed with the pkg_add command then.

This worst thing to me about pkgsrc is that the patches rarely seem to get feed back to the programs maintainers like they used to.
There are lots of little patches in pkgsrc that really should have been folded back to the programs.
This used to happen more often, now I find on machines I do not want to use the pkgsrc kitchen sink approach it is taking more work then ever before to build things when not using pkgsrc.

However, please note that you don't have to use NetBSD to use pkgsrc, so all the examples given here can apply to other systems with few hassles; otherwise, use your packaging system of choice to get thttpd.
Focusing on pkgsrc, there are two ways to install thttpd: from sources or from binaries.
Sources are appropriate if you do not want to use the default settings, you want to configure the build (perhaps with optimization flags), or you need thttpd on a system for which there are no binary packages.
