Jacques Cartier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jacques Cartier (December 31, 1491 – September 1, 1557) was a French explorer who is popularly thought of as one of the major discoverers of Canada, or more specifically, the interior eastern region that would become the first european-inhabited area of that country.
Born in Saint-Malo, France in 1491, Cartier was part of a respectable family of mariners and improved his social status in 1520 by marrying Catherine des Granches, member of a leading ship-owning family.
Cartier set sail for a second voyage on May 19 of the following year with 3 ships, 110 men, and the two native boys (who were returned to the chief).

Cartier tells us that two leagues from the foot of the bottom fall was an Indian village called Tutonaguy, but he does not say whether or not this was the same place as the Hochelaga of his previous voyage.
Cartier was enraptured with the land which he had discovered,--'as goodly a country,' he wrote, 'as possibly can with eye be seen, and all replenished with very goodly trees.' Here and there the wigwams of the savages dotted the openings of the forest.
Cartier, as before, noted carefully the bearing of the land as he went along, took soundings, and, in the interest of future pilots of the coast, named and described the chief headlands and landmarks as he passed.

We walked past Place Vauquelin (a small public square with a statue of Jean Vauquelin facing the statue of Nelson in Place Jacques-Cartier) and Vieux Palais de Justice (the Old Court House) and down Notre-Dame to Place d'Armes and the Notre-Dame Basilica.
Place d'Armes was also where we saw the devil horse, which was just a regular horse being used to give rides to tourists, whose ear-covering thing was red and therefore looked like devil horns.
The centrepiece of Place d'Armes is a huge statue of Paul de Chomedey, sieur de Maisonneuve (the city's founder), surrounded by four prominent settlers.
