 Scientific Notation
To convert a large number to scientific notation, first count how many times the decimal place must be moved to the left to make the value between one and ten, then multiply this number by one positive power of ten for each move.
To convert a small number to scientific notation, first count how many times the decimal place must be moved to the right to make the value between one and ten, then multiply this number by one negative power of ten for each move.
To convert a small number in scientific notationto a normal number, move the decimal place to the left once for every negative power of ten in the expression, and pad the added decimal places with zeros.

computersmiths - History of Chinese Invention - The Decimal System of Number Representation
This place holding or place notation was much easier than inventing a new character for each number (imagine having to memorize an enormous number of characters just to read the date!).
Most historians agree that the development of a decimal place value system of numeration originated from the Indian subcontinent, and that Arabic scholars were responsible for the system.
A noteworthy characteristic of the Chinese system, and one that represented a substantial advantage over the Mediterranean systems, was its predilection for a decimal notation.

 Scientific Notation
Scientific notation provides us with the only reasonable means of dealing with a broad range of magnitudes, such as we encounter in astronomy.
Similarly, when inputting a number in scientific notation into a calculator, there is usually a button labeled "EE" or "E" that indicates the exponent (it is pushed at the point where "x 10" appears in the number).
If adding or subtracting numbers in scientific notation, it is necessary to ensure that the powers of ten are the same.

 Hungarian Notation
Now there is a very scaled down version of hungarian notation that's been adopted by the FB community but its in place more for organization of files, and used to define recordsets.
The problem with hungarian notation, is that it is sometimes used in place of good programming practices.
The other problem with Hungarian Notation is that its primary use is to help define the data type that a variable will be.

New Notation Practice for Beats of Unusual Length
To illustrate, let me use binary notation to represent common note values.
Now let's look at the same range of notes, to 32nd note granularity (five decimal places in binary notation), in order from 0 to 1:
However, the traditional notation is also a straitjacket, forcing composers to think of beats in terms of "simple" or "compound" to the exclusion of other possibilities.

SparkNotes: Units, Scientific Notation, and Significant Figures: Scientific Notation
To make things simpler when expressing very large or small values, scientists express values in terms of "a x 10b", where a is the value and b is number of places the decimal place had to move in order to express a in manageable terms.
In the case of numbers smaller than one, the exponent becomes negative, and that negative value represents how many zeroes there are between the number and the decimal place:
As we shall see in the next section, scientific notation also is generally more compliant with the rules of significant figures.

The 'background' property is a shorthand property for setting the individual background properties (i.e., 'background-color', 'background-image', 'background-repeat', 'background-attachment' and 'background-position') at the same place in the style sheet.

 scientific notation
In this notation, the number is written as a product of a number between 1 and 10 and a power of 10.
is also equivalent to 0.000573, but it is not written in proper scientific notation because 57.3 is not a number beteen 1 and 10.
The short way is to count the number of decimal places you move to the right, which decreases the exponent by one for each movement of the decimal place.

MUSICAL NOTATION - LoveToKnow Article on MUSICAL NOTATION
It is at the time of Franco of Cologne 2 that measured music takes its rise, together with the black notation in place of neumes, which disappeared altogether by the end of the 14th century.
Indications of a scheme of notation based, not on the alphabet, but on the use of dashes, hooks, curves, dots and strokes are found to exist as early as the 6th century, while specimens in.
In the black notation, which led to the modern system, the square note with a tail (~) is the long sound; the square note without a tail (.) is the breve; and the lozenge shape (4) is the semibreve.

Binary numeral system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So in the algorithm to convert from an integer decimal numeral to its binary equivalent, the number is divided by two, and the remainder written in the ones-place.
A binary number can be represented by any sequence of bits (binary digits), which in turn may be represented by any mechanism capable of being in two mutually exclusive states.
When a string of binary symbols is manipulated in this way, it is called a bitwise operation; the logical operators AND, OR, and XOR may be performed on corresponding bits in two binary numerals provided as input.

Notation!  The "Secret" Road Map to Musical Expression
Musical accents are often discussed in beginning theory classes only soon to be forgotten and probably never actually connected to their value in understanding musical phrasing.
Once one masters the basics of musicianship and is able to reproduce musical notation accurately and in tune, the most important ingredient in musical performance, expression, remains to be mastered.
If we agree that music is always in motion, moving toward or away from goal points, determining the goal point or points within a complex musical phrase must be a starting place for every conductor or performer.

 Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz (1646 - 1716)
Leibnitz shortly before his death admitted in a letter to Conti that in 1676 Collins had shewn him some Newtonian papers, but implied that they were of little or no value, - presumably he referred to Newton's letters of June 13 and Oct.
Leibnitz occupies at least as large a place in the history of philosophy as he does in the history of mathematics.
Leibnitz (like Newton) recognised the importance of James Gregory's remarks on the necessity of examining whether infinite series are convergent or divergent, and proposed a test to distinguish series whose terms are alternately positive and negative.

In this section I will define the new notation and present examples using both notations side by side in an effort to convince someone that the new notation is sufficiently more clear as to merit experimental study.

Actuarial science teaches that policies at risk of selective and deteriorating decrements must be valued allowing for them.

 Binary Numbers
Positional notation is used when a number larger than 9 needs to be represented; each position of a digit signifies how many groups of 10, 100, 1000, etc. are contained in that number.
Group Size for Positional Notation of Decimal Numbers
To convert from a number represented in the decimal number system to a number represented in the binary number system, all you need to do is repeatedly subtract the largest power of two that you can from the decimal number, then place ones or zeros in the correct position to represent these groups.
