Spontaneous remission and the placebo effect, which are known as nonspecific effects, are significant phenomena that have great impact on consumers and health-care professionals.
Beecher's seminal paper "The Powerful Placebo" (Beecher 1955) is among the most frequently cited and was undoubtedly responsible for the double-blind study design having been adopted as the universal standard.

Placebo medications are sometimes prescribed when a drug is not really needed or when one would not be appropriate because they make patients feel well taken care of.
A traditional placebo’s lack of side effects, however, often identifies it, so an older drug is sometimes used in drug tests instead of or in addition to a placebo.
The “placebo effect” is an apparent improvement in health due not to any treatment but only to the patient’s belief that he or she will improve (as by taking a dummy pill that is thought to be a cure).

Spontaneous Remission and the Placebo Effect
In medicine the effect of suggestion is referred to as the "placebo effect." The Latin word placebo means "I shall please." A placebo effect is a beneficial response to a substance, device, or procedure that cannot be accounted for on the basis of pharmacologic or other direct physical action.
This design cannot distinguish an effect of placebo from the natural course of the disease, regression to the mean (the tendency for random increases or decreases to be followed by observations closer to the average), or the effects of other factors.
Placebos appeared to produce modest benefit in studies of pain and in other studies where the outcome being measured was similarly subjective.

Placebo Effect: The Power of the Sugar Pill
In these trials a placebo is obligatorily administered to a control group of patients, and later the results of this group are compared with those obtained in the group that receives the active medicine, whose action one intends to demonstrate.
We could then define placebo effect as the therapeutically positive (or negative) result of expectations implanted in the nervous system of the patients, through conditioning, consequent to the prior use of medicines, contacts with doctors, and information obtained by means of reading and remarks of other people.
To conclude, we remind that some authors consider that the placebo effect has a dark side, because the cures due to it favor the perpetuation of the use of ineffective and irrational medicinal therapeutic procedures, as those used in the so-called "alternative medicine".

Placebo did have the advantage of a significantly larger performing space - when the fl tab was hauled down we were agog at the sheer size of The Academy's stage.
There was never any real doubt that the new Placebo album would dominate proceedings and thus it proved, with a string of heavy guitar songs unwound to put Six By Seven to shame.

Medicinal Mimicry: Science News Online, Feb. 3, 2001   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Scientists at the conference reported findings suggesting that response to a placebo may rest on both the meaning that a person associates with a particular treatment and his or her previous experience with medication.
The placebo response is both a conscious response to the meaning of therapy and a conditioned response to treatment from a health professional, some researchers contend.
To see whether a placebo could elicit a conditioned response from the mice, Ader followed the sweet drink in the third group with injections of cyclophosphamide or saline in a random pattern such that each mouse got two doses of the active drug in a month.

Therapeutic Placebo Effect by P Kinser
We most often hear of placebos in clinical tests of new medications or treatments, where one group in the study is given the actual medication and the other receives a placebo which feels, tastes, appears exactly like the drug.
The placebo group's reactions to the placebo serve as a base-line against which the effects of the drug can be studied.
However, studies of the exact physiological mechanism of the placebo effect are rare and difficult, especially when in most cases the use of a placebo is to test the effect of another drug.

MDD July/August 1999: The Mysterious Placebo Effect
Researchers still may be inclined to view placebo effects as a nuisance or as a background noise that complicates clinical trial design.
This is particularly true in crossover trials, she said, when participants are informed that they will receive placebo at some point in the trial, as opposed to being told simply that they may receive a placebo at some point in the study.
One alternative is a “putative placebo trial”, in which the new drug is compared with a standard thrombolytic; in that case, the difference between the two is compared with that 2% or 2.5%.

As the researchers alerted participants that the placebo was coming, and injected the placebo dose, the amount of additional concentrated salt water needed to maintain participants' pain over time increased — indicating a reduction in pain sensitivity that the subjects were not aware of.
Nine of the participants were classified as “high placebo responders” because they had more than a 20 percent difference between pain and placebo scans in their average pain ratings per volume of salt water infused — in other words, the placebo effect was strong.
The power of placebos to ease pain symptoms has been well-documented in many groups of subjects and illnesses, but the researchers started with healthy young males to rule out the impact of chronic pain, mood disorders and hormone variations, which can also affect the endorphin system.
