  PLACEBO band history
The band's last gig of 2004 was at Wembley Arena on November 5th where the legendary Robert Smith of The Cure joined them on stage for duets of "Without You I'm Nothing" and The Cure's song "Boys Don't Cry".
Even though they were supposed to be taking a break, the band took time in April of 2005 to play several dates in South America, a continent which had been completely passed over during their previous tour.
Placebo, the band's first full-length album, was re-released in September 2006 as a special edition which included some b-sides, demos, new liner notes, and a DVD.

The band gained some measure of notoriety for the sexualities of its members (Olsdal is gay, Hewitt is straight and Molko is bisexual) and their excessive lifestyles, often chronicled in their songs (the title of the track "Special K" from Black Market Music, for instance, is a reference to the drug ketamine).

Placebo - Band information and album discography
Placebo stand for some of the best neurotic and androgyne British indie rock since the mid-90's.
All of their albums are filled with noisy yet carefully contructed and melodic anthems floating around in a universe of messed up minds, uncertain sexyality and till-death-do-us-part relationships.
These are not lyrics for the casual listener, but put Placebo on when you're bordering despair and you're certain to find a strange positive solace in their music.

 Placebo
Originally, a placebo was a substance that a well-meaning doctor would give to a patient, telling him that it was a powerful drug (e.g., a painkiller), when in fact it was nothing more than a sugar pill.
Experimenters typically use placebos in the context of a clinical trial, in which a "test group" of patients receives the therapy being tested, and a "control group" receives the placebo.
Appropriate use of a placebo in a clinical trial often requires or at least benefits from a double-blind study design, which means that neither the experimenters nor the subjects know which subjects are in the "test group" and which are in the "control group".

Placebo released two of the most powerful, melodic, biting albums of the late 90’s, and this review won’t tell you that the band are rubbish, because they’re one of Britain’s best exports in recent years.
The press have also condemned the band for experimenting with electronics calling it an overused idea and unoriginal – what they overlook is that the band have always dabbled with electronic music, punching a hole straight through their futile little argument.
Placebo without Molko’s voice are only half the band, as they lack the commitment and power that his bruised voice communicates.

 PLACEBO
Stepping out of this scene of lager-soaked lust (and considered by most to be the anti-Brit pop band) was Placebo, who scored a Top 20 hit in the UK with the track “Nancy Boy” — an infectious ode to androgyny and ambiguity that caught everyone's attention.
Other singles from the band's self-titled debut, such as “Bruise Pristine,” were also well received, and by year's end, Placebo, with their flippant, wire-thin, gender-bending frontman Brian Molko, had arrived, and, arguably, things have not been the same since.

It wasn't like Placebo had a hit song on the radio, as the London trio did in 1998 with "Pure Morning" (you know the refrain -- "a friend in need is a friend indeed/a friend with weed is betterÂ…").
Placebo couldn't have been any smarter when it came to the order of the set list, an artform most bands can't seem to be bothered to perfect.
From there, the band eased into the material from Sleeping, which, judging by the focus and enthusiasm exhibited in its performance, seems to be a work Placebo is quite proud of.

Make what you will of it, but Placebo thrive on ambiguity and confusion; a glorious noise which at once both confronts and celebrates the uncertainties at the heart of the band.
Even at their most elemental level, Placebo challenge the stereotypical notions of identity and gender - the pure adrenaline rush of testosterone from a band that playfully revel in subverting the sexual norms.
If there is a rock lineage to which the band belong, it would include such artists as Iggy Pop, Lou Reed and David Bowie, all of whom explored the dangerous ambiguities in their own identities.

While Placebo’s previous couple of albums demonstrated a tendency to pander to a devout fanbase eager to suckle up frontman Brian Molko’s shrill delivery of prurient autobiographical narrative and sexual innuendo, their fifth album, Meds, finds them ready to engage again with the rock mainstream.
For years now, Placebo fans have been captivated by Molko's bitter sweet lyrics, often so breathtaking that you sit in pure disbelief and wonder at the elegance, the poetry, the downright cheek of the man to say such things.
Meds is undoubtably the album of Placebo's career to date, every sound on every track is beautifully crafted and polished to perfection but prevented from sounding processed or sterile by the vein of raw human feeling that is their trademark.
