Placer deposit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In geology, a placer deposit is a deposit of earth, sand, or gravel, containing valuable minerals in particles, especially by the side of a river, or in the bed of a mountain stream.
Placer mining is an important source of gold, and was the main technique used in the early years of the California gold rush.
Placer deposits form due to the differential settling of the denser, heavier components of moving sand and gravel.

Yukon Geological Survey-Surficial Geology & Placer Studies
Placer gold deposits are widespread throughout the Stewart River and southern part of the Dawson map areas, and placer gold is the only mineral of economic importance to have been found (although there are rumors that platinum and diamonds have been recovered from several placers).
However, placer reserves are declining, and given the historic and economic importance of the study area, the Yukon Geological Survey prioritized the development of a comprehensive and up-to-date description of the placer deposits.
Other purposes of the project were to interpret the formation of the placer deposits, to relate the geology of the placer deposits to the regional surficial and bedrock geology, and to determine the potential of undiscovered placer deposits in the area.

When the copper ores are of low-grade in their original deposition it often happens that processes of secondary enrichment, which are later described, are required to bring them up to a richness which warrants mining.
Deposits along Anticlinal Summits and in Synclinal Troughs.—When strata experience folding they are violently strained at the bends, and, if stiff or brittle like limestone, often crack in limited fissures, which in anticlines open upward and in synclines downward.
Deposits in Faults.—This type of ore-body was one of the earliest established, and has always figured very prominently in the minds of students of the subject since the first systematic forrnulations of our knowledge.

Streambed placers are the most important kind of deposit for the small-scale operator, but the gravel terraces and benches above the streams and the ancient river channels (often concealed by later deposits) are potential sources of gold.
Other types of placers include those in outwash areas of streams where they enter other streams or lakes, those at the foot of mountainous areas or in regions where streams enter into broader valleys, or those along the ocean front where beach deposits may form by the sorting action of waves and tidal currents.
Deposits are also found in the drainages of the Trinity and Klamath Rivers in northern California and at scattered points in the southern part of the State.

In their model they interpret the Precambrian placer deposits to have formed between the creation of the world 4004 BCE and the Flood (2300 BCE) (known amongst some creationists as the New World Era) and the Cainozoic placer gold deposits to have formed during the waning phase of Noah's Flood.
By mentioning every significant, thought not necessarily economical, placer deposit in the Precambrian while focussing only on the amount of placer gold extracted from the Palaeozoic and Mesozoic sedimentary rocks, Lalomov and Tabolitch are deceptively stacking the results in their favour.
In the case of placers this means that the gold is not present as detrital grains, the gold crystallised within the conglomerates from a mineralising fluid.

A "bleed-off deposit" is the natural erosion of a bench placer, lode, mine dump, or tailing pile, etc., which over time releases gold, which enters into the streambed at some point, where there is a significant amount to allow a deposit to form.
A braided stream is one flowing in several divided and reuniting channels resembling the strands of a braid; the cause of division being the obstruction of sediment deposited by the stream.
Where more sediment is deposited into any part of a stream that is removed, the building of bars becomes excessive, and the stream develops an intricate network of interlacing channels; thus said to be braided.

However, most placer deposits have been thoroughly reworked at least twice--first by Chinese laborers, who arrived soon after the initial boom periods and recovered gold from the lower grade deposits and tailings left by the first miners, and later by itinerant miners during the 1930's.
In addition, placers associated with gravels that are stream remnants from an older erosion cycle occur in the same general area.
