EZGeography - Multituberculata   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
About 80 genera of multituberculata are known, including Lambdopsalis, Ptilodus and Meniscoessus.
In their 2001 study, Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum found that most multituberculates could be referred to two suborders: "Plagiaulacida" and Cimolodonta.
"Plagiaulacida" is paraphyletic; it is an informal suborder which doesn't satisfy the cladistic criterion of consisting of an ancestor and all of its descendants.

Plagiaulacida   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Plagiaulacids, (an informal suborder), are the most basal of these multis, and ranged from the Middle Jurassic to the Lower Cretaceous of the northern hemisphere.
In more detail: Kielan-Jaworowska and Hurum (2001) divides “Plagiaulacida” into three informal lineages, each of which seems to represent a natural group, (an ancestor and all its descendants).
This has been tentatively proposed for Janumys of the Mid Cretaceous.

It lived in North America during the 'age of the dinosaurs'.
"Glirodon retains the plesiomorphic 'plagiaulacidan' ("Plagiaulacida") dental formula and shares with Allodontidae the structure of the upper premolars (Pl.1 fis 2-4).
It differs from the Paulchoffatiidae and Plagiaulacidae in having a single-cusped I3," (Kielan-Jaworowska & Hurum, 2001, p.401-402).

These animals were members of 'Plagiaulacida' Simpson, 1925, (nomen correctum McKenna, 1971 ex Plagiaulacoidea), a basal grouping of multituberculates.
They were close relatives of the Plagiaulacidae, whilst the second upper molar has similarities to ones known from the informal Paracimexomys group.
Eobaataridae is presently placed with the suborder 'Plagiaulacida', (p.937).

On the Ancient Relations between New Zealand and South America, by Hermann von Ihering
It now appears that in Patagonia deposits are existent whose fossil mammals are entirely composed of Plagiaulacida.
On this point I fully agree with Ameghino, but not that the Plagiaulacida came from Patagonia into North America by way of an Eocene migration, which was geographically impossible.
Moreover, according to quite recent discoveries made by Marsh, which were not then known to Ameghino, polymastodont and quadritubercular Diprotodonta lived together during the Cretaceous period in North America, and there can be no doubt but that both types were already co-existent during the Jura formation.

However, the taxon of Plagiaulacida has fallen into some disrepute, though it's still a reasonably convenient label for the more basal multituberculates.
Carpenter places the genus within Plagiaulacidae, although other researchers recognise a separate, presently monotypic family.
McKenna and Bell, (1997), located the genus within Plagiaulacidae, though the term was used for a paraphyletic group, rather than a complete clade.

Shares with some 'Plagiaulacida' three lower premolars and apparently five upper premolars, and presence of an upper canine, but differs from them and from all other multituberculates in structure of p4.
The arginbaatarid p4 is arcuate as in the Cimolodonta, but is unique in having the enamel limited to a part of the crown, and during ontogeny rotating anteroventrally over the worn p2 and p3, which gradually disappear.
Isn't the ptilodont enamel microprismatic, with the exception of the weird bird, Cimolodon?
