		The city was founded in 1812 on the east banks of the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy rivers, where it assumed the official distinction of state capital in 1816.
		In the city the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 14.0% from 18 to 24, 35.1% from 25 to 44, 17.9% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who are 65 years of age or older.
		The Ohio Statehouse began construction in 1839 on a 10 acre (40,000 mÂ²) plot of land donated by four prominent Columbus landowners to form Capitol Square, not part of the original layout of the city.

		These consisted of three major strains: the earliest 18th century immigration from Switzerland and the Palatinate to Eastern Pennsylvania, the 19th century Alsatian-Bavarian-Hessian Amish movement to western Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, and Ontario, and the Volhynian Amish of the 1874 immigration to Kansas and South Dakota.
