My mention of a "drop- dead headset" was not intended to assert its technological superiority over a plain bearing headset.
Smooth, linear damping - friction in the case of plain bearings - may be okay, but I doubt that it's a good thing in any design unless it's very consistent and linear.
Adjusting a plain bearing can be a less critical (sloppier) process than adjusting a headset, and if that makes it easier, okay, but personally I find the set up of a 'real' headset - with precision hardware designed for the process of adjusting and locking - a neat, simple and elegant procedure.

That's not true...the ceramic ball bearings (esp. Turbonetics) are unreliable compared to the Garrett stuff which is used in MANY OEM applications including the Mazdaspeed Protoge and the new Mazdaspeed Miata.
The Garrett GT Ball bearing center sections AND the plain bearing center sections are very durable.
I will tell you the ceramic ball bearings are not going to have the lifespan that the garrett ones will, they will not recommend GT series turbo's becuase they are great turbo's(sounds silly maybe but they don't have them.) I will recommend a GTseries turbo over theirs any day to any customer I have.
