Plain People   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
In the mid-19th century most Mennonites, Amish, Brethren in Christ, and Brethren (Dunkers, Church of the Brethren) could be considered "Plain People." The Society of Friends (Quakers), who probably coined the term, were rapidly losing their plainness by this time.
To "dress plain" means to wear a distinctive, traditional garb which is not in fashion with the world.
Some of those who are visibly conformed to the world still identify themselves as plain people by virtue of their inner values and simple life-style.

Plain people - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The plain people is a generic term used to refer to Amish, Old Order, Conservative and Old Colony Mennonites, Old German Baptist Brethren and Old Order River Brethren in Pennsylvania.
The original dictates for a plain and simple life were to counter the Abomination of the Roman Catholic Church ceremonies and the life style the Catholic clergy maintained prior to the Counter Reformation.
The degree to which this principle was supported varied among the congregations, but in general, the Amish people believed that the Mennonites had not done enough to separate themselves from the rest of the world.

No. 01CA1082. People v. Dunlap. - September 9, 2004 - Colorado Court of Appeals Opinions
The People contend the trial court erred by vacating the sentences for second degree kidnapping after concluding that the instructions and verdict forms did not adequately instruct the jury that the sentencing enhancers must be proved beyond a reasonable doubt.
Plain error occurs when the error so undermines the fundamental fairness of the trial itself as to cast serious doubt on the reliability of the judgment of conviction.
The People acknowledge in their reply brief that it was error that no single instruction expressly told the jury that it could find the existence of an enhancement factor only if that factor had been proved beyond a reasonable doubt.

 Plain People
The appellation, "The Plain People," most likely derives its largest share of meaning from the fact that these people are simply and plainly dressed, in many cases maintaining rather a distinctive cut of dress which they believe is a means to the end of simple Christian life.
The weddings among these people are usually a matter of large gatherings of relatives and friends at which time a great deal of frivolity and even intemperance in strong drink is sometimes too prevalent to be consistent with principles of temperance which one would expect to be more fully adhered to.
Plain dressing is taught, and a general uniformity is encouraged, but this is regarded as a means to an end.

 No. 3-03-0611, People v. Buckner
The plain error rule is invoked only where the evidence was closely balanced, or the error in the trial court denied the defendant a fair trial.
Generally, under a plain error analysis, it is the defendant's burden to show that the error prejudiced him, and a forfeited error cannot be corrected on appeal unless the defendant shows that the error was prejudicial.
Moreover, the second prong of the plain error doctrine may be invoked in circumstances where, despite the absence of objection, application of the rule is necessary to preserve the integrity and reputation of the judicial process.

Plainness was actually something of a virtue among political republicans in the American colonies and the young United States.
In early American society there were, of course, people of “the better sort.” But they were clergy or people with more education or status derived from well-regarded ancestry, not people who had more money or more things, or who lived on a scale much different from their neighbors.
These are questions that even the historic “plain people” face as they move into new types of jobs and other settings, which consume significant amounts of their weeks.

The constitutionality of a plain view seizure "must turn on the legality of the intrusion that enables [police] to perceive and physically seize the property in question" (Texas v Brown, 460 US 730, 737).
Focusing on when and where the plain view item was seized, the suppression court is able to determine whether the seizure occurred within the scope of the valid portion of the warrant.
If the People fail to meet these conditions, the police were necessarily searching beyond the scope and intensity of the valid portion of the warrant and the evidence must be suppressed.

Also, although slavery was protected in the constitution, it also prohibited the importation of new slaves from outside the Confederate States of America (except from slaveholding states or territories of the United States).
The Confederacy actively used the military to arrest people suspected of loyalty to the United States.
The tariff mattered little; the Confederacy's ports were shut to all commercial traffic by the Union blockade, and very few people paid taxes on goods smuggled from the U.S. The lack of adequate financial resources led the Confederacy to finance the war through printing money, which in turn led to high inflation.
