We have, however experimented with pulling the audio feed from the CD-ROM of a PowerMac clone and running it to a pair of RCA jacks mounted in an empty drive bay cover -- it works, but it needs a buffer at the input to match the Mac's line level.
Although effective with Apple's proprietary PlainTalk mic, the audio input on many PowerMacs are simply too proprietary to use any other mic.
Although the only reasons we could speculate anyone would want to use any of the mics were cosmetic as the Apple PlainTalk mic works as good or better than the off the shelf variety.

The capability to talk to your computer is available today in Apple's own limited PlainTalk speech recognition (which ships as part of Mac OS 9), and in products like IBM's ViaVoice, which offers continuous speech recognition on the Mac.
PlainTalk's first rumblings were felt in 1990, when speech recognition labs complained of a sudden "brain drain." Apple, sparing no expense, was hiring every researcher it could find.
After about a year of intensive work, Apple began demonstrating the fruits of its labors, code-named Casper, which became publicly available as PlainTalk in the AV Macs of 1993; it was then made standard in 1994 as part of System 7.1.2, with the emergence of the PowerPC-based Macs.

But, two years on, PlainTalk seems to be making something of a comeback, although the PlainTalk name has been dropped and the software is now simply referred to as 'English Speech Recognition'.

PlainTalk is intended to accommodate normal 1/8th inch stereo connectors but the actual contacts in the jack do not always line up perfectly with standard connectors.
This is an inevitable consequence of trying to support the nonstandard PlainTalk connection, which actually draws power from the Mac to power the PlainTalk microphone.
