Carbon steel, also called plain carbon steel, is a malleable, iron-based metal containing carbon, small amounts of manganese, and other elements that are inherently present.
Carbon steels may be specified by chemical composition, mechanical properties, method of deoxidation, or thermal treatment (and the resulting microstructure).
Cast carbon steels are specified to ASTM A27, A216, A352, or A487.

 Percentage of Carbon in Steel
The plain carbon steels also may be classified on the basis of carbon content as hypoeutectoid or hypereutectoid steels; the hypoeutectoid steels are those in which the carbon content is below 0.80 percent, and the hypereutectoid steels are those above this value.
Machines, automobile bodies, most structural steel for buildings, ship hulls, bedsprings, and bobby pins are among products made of carbon steel.
There are at least 2,000 types of carbon steel.

The martensitic steels are magnetic containing typically 12% chromium and a moderate carbon content; they are hardenable by quenching and tempering like plain carbon steels and find their main application in cutlery manufacture, aerospace and general engineering.
Standard ferritic steels contain 10.5 to 27 percent chromium and are nickel-free; because of their low carbon content (less than 0.2 percent), they are not hardenable by heat treatment and have less critical anticorrosion applications, such as architectural and auto trim.
The ferritic steels are magnetic and have a low carbon content and contain chromium as the main element, typically at the 13% and 17% levels.

HSLA Steel - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These elements are intended to utterly alter the microstructure of plain carbon steels, which is usually a ferrite-pearlite aggregate, to produce a very fine dispersion of alloy carbides in an almost pure ferrite.
HSLA Steels are so called because they only contain a very small percentage of carbon (less than one-tenth of a percent) and only small amounts of very specific alloying elements.
HSLA Steel (High Strength Low Alloy Steel) is a type of steel alloy that provides many benefits over regular steel alloys.

 Stainless Steel
Ferritic stainless steels are plain chromium steels with no significant nickel content; the lack of nickel results in lower corrosion resistance than the austenitics (chromium-nickel stainless steels).
Steel that has properties made up mostly of the element carbon (C) and which relies on the carbon content for structure.
Austenitic stainless steels are hardened and strengthened through cold working (changing the structure and shape of steel by applying stress at low temperature) instead of by heat treatment.

Equivalent carbon content - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The resulting equivalent carbon coefficient allows the alloy to be categorized alongside plain carbon steels, and have their weldability and hardness properties compared with them.
The equivalent carbon content of a steel alloy refers to method of measuring the maximum hardness and the weldability of the alloy based on the chemical composition of the alloy.
The equivalent carbon content is the most common such standard, but others exist, such as the equivalent nickel content and equivalent chromium content.

As steel is heated above 1300º, the iron atoms begin to form austenite, which has the ability to dissolve carbon atoms – like sugar dissolving in iced tea.

The essential difference between ordinary steel and pure iron is the amount of carbon in the former, which reduces the ductility but increases the strength and the susceptibility to hardening when rapidly cooled from elevated temperatures.
2), which now consists of two constituents, the white one being the ferrite, and the dark parts representing the constituent containing the carbon, the amount of which is therefore an index of the quantity of carbon in the steel.
Carbon is present as a compound of iron and carbon (6-67 %) called cementite, having the chemical formula Fe This cementite is hard (Brinell hardness 600 +), brittle and brilliantly white.

Carbon is by far the most important element in steel: The changes in composition (cementite or iron carbide [Fe3C] content), microstructure (pearlite content), and mechanical properties (strength and ductility, in particular) resulting from changes in the carbon content in annealed plain carbon steels are shown very clearly in Fig.
Since the two phases that form have different compositions, atoms must diffuse during the reaction: Most of the carbon in the austenite diffuses to the Fe3C, and most of the iron to the ferrite (().
The pearlite exists as "islands" surrounded by ferrite; this permits the alloy to be ductile, due to the continuous primary ferrite, yet strong, due to the discontinuous, dispersion-strengthened pearlite.
