Souvanna Phouma admitted the presence of four or five battalions of Chinese Communists in north Laos, while the North Vietnamese were also advancing.
The Communists were eventually driven back from the Plaine des Jarres by Laotian forces and Meo tribesmen, operating with U.S. air support.
In what was really the Laotian war, the North Vietnamese forces drove the Laotians back from the Plaine des Jarres, despite heavy U.S. air bombardment.

 F-105 Thunderchief - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In spite of a troubled early service life, the F-105 became the dominant attack aircraft during the Vietnam War.
In a foreshadowing of its Wild Weasel role, the first F-105D combat mission of the war involved an attack of an anti-aircraft artillery site on Plaine des Jarres.
The first Thunderchief of the war was also lost in this mission, the pilot safely ejecting.

The Plaine Des Jars was generally open and flat with forests and rice fields scattered among the small hamlets and villages that dotted the region.
The entire PDJ was laced with streams, roads and trails of all sizes that connected the various villages and fields together.
On 26 September 1972, the Pathet Lao's news service reported that an F4 had been shot down on 1 September over the Plaine Des Jarres and it was believed by US intelligence analysts that this referred to the loss of Capt. Wood's and Major Greenwood's aircraft.

It was also approximately 1 mile east of Route 5, the north/south primary road; 3 miles northeast of Muang Pang, 5 miles southwest of Ban Phuang and 8 miles south of the Xieng Khouang airfield.
Up until that time Roger Carroll's family had not been told there was a possibility he might have survived the loss of his aircraft let alone the probability that he had been captured.

A USAF jet was shot down by a North Vietnamese aircraft and the USAF redirected their support in the unsuccessful rescue effort of the pilot.
In Covert Ops, Parker describes one Twin Pack mission along the northwestern edge of the PDJ where the AA helicopter carried a team of Thai commanders and CIA officers to help with the air support.

The U.S. committed hundreds of millions of dollars to the war effort in Laos, but details of this secret operation were not released until August 1971.
Doug Ferguson and Fielding Featherston were aboard one of five F4D aircraft on a mission into the Plaine des Jarres region of Laos on December 30, 1969.
Their ship was hit by enemy fire and exploded in a fireball.

General Phoumi was informed that the U.S. would continue its efforts to gain adherence to the 1962 Geneva agreements and stabilize the situation in Laos.

Their first combat action took place on 12 August 1964, when 8th TFW F-105Ds, while flying support to search and rescue missions over Laos, attacked enemy antiaircraft gun sites in the Plaine des Jarres.
Today, the 374th AW is USAF's only airlift wing in the Far East, providing airlift support to all Department of Defense agencies in the Pacific theater of operation.

In response to the Tonkin Gulf incident, the PACAF sent eight F-105Ds from the 18th TFW from Yokota from Yokota AB in Japan to Korat RTAFB in Thailand.
The first action took place when aircraft from the 36th TFS flying a rescue mission over Laos attacked a antiaircraft site in the Plaine des Jarres.
F-105D 62-4371 was hit by ground fire, but the pilot managed to eject safely and was recovered.
