The region was little known, however, and subsequent explorations to include Kansas were the Lewis and Clark expedition (1803–6), the Arkansas River journey of Zebulon M. Pike in 1806, and the scientific expedition of Stephen H. Long in 1819.
Kansas, at this time mainly a region to be crossed on the way to California and Oregon, was organized as a territory in 1854.
As conditions improved, Kansas returned largely to its allegiance to the Republican party and gained a reputation as a conservative stronghold with a bent for moral reform, indicated in the state’s strong support of prohibition; laws against the sale of liquor remained on the books in Kansas from 1880 to 1949.

These plains are bounded on the south by a region of Interior Highlands, consisting of the Ozark Plateaus and the Ouachita province, and by the Coastal Plain.
The layers of sedimentary rock deposited in the inland sea were stripped from the crest of the rising mountainous belt by erosion and transported to its flanks as the gravel, sand, and mud of streams and rivers.
A large central area of the plain is preserved, however, essentially untouched and unaffected by the streams, as a little-modified remnant of the depositional surface of 5 million years ago.

On July 22, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Drought Monitor showed almost all of Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and the primary wheat-producing area of Texas to be either abnormally dry or in a moderate drought.
With 91 percent of the crop tasseled or silked, Kansas corn was rated 31 percent poor to very poor, 33 percent fair, and 36 percent good to excellent.
The Kansas sorghum crop rated 25 percent poor to very poor, 44 percent fair, and 31 percent good to excellent.

This atlas has been prepared by the Kansas Geological Survey with the initial components developed under a contract with the Kansas Water Office for a High Plains Aquifer Evaluation study.
Work is ongoing, and will result in additions to the atlas and possibly modifications to existing sections.
Additional products of the Kansas Water Office contract include sections on statewide water resource issues that extend beyond the High Plains aquifer: information on surface water reliability and quality and on the aquifers of eastern Kansas are accessible through the Other Kansas Water Resources section at the bottom of this page.
