Plains, population 653, was a beehive of activities with press and tourists in the thousands crowding the streets.
Today, Plains is, once again, a quiet, peaceful small town (population 716) with business as usual and smaller numbers of tourist visiting a President's hometown hoping to get a glimpse of Jimmy Carter and to see this little southern town where a young boy grew up to become the 39th President of the United States.
Plains High School (the official State School of Georgia) is the visitor center and museum for the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which consist of 77 acres in Plains administered by the U.S. Department of Interior.

Plains, city, Sumter County, southwestern Georgia; incorporated as a city 1975.
Known as the home of former President Jimmy Carter, the city is a commercial and processing center for a farm region in which peanuts, soybeans, corn, and peaches are grown.
The community, founded nearby in 1840 as The Plains of Dura (after the biblical region), was moved to its present location in the 1870s to meet the railroad.

 Jimmy Carter Peanut statue, Plains, Georgia
The peanut sat for years on the steps of the Plains train depot, where souvenir-hunters gouged pieces out of it and carved their names into its Styrofoam shell.
They estimate it's "the most photographed thing in Plains." A small fence around it is in the process of collapsing under years and tons of tourists perching for photos.
There is a large hole cut in the back of the peanut, which we hastily assumed was a byproduct of the concrete anchoring work.
