Amazon.co.uk: Plan of Attack: The Road to War: Books: Bob Woodward   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Plan of Attack is the definitive account of a turning point in history as President George W Bush, his war council and allies launch a pre-emptive attack on Iraq, toppling Saddam Hussein and taking over the country.
Plan of Attack relates the how and the why of decision making, including the secret meetings, secure phone calls, strategies, dilemmas, conflicts and the raw emotions of war as they are rarely seen in contemporary history.
Woodward's PLAN OF ATTACK is essentially an apologia to the Bush II administration, to true investigative journalism he once iconically symbolized, and to modern "courtier" journalism (as Cornel West so politely called the new American whorehouse of the far Right) that is now called the news, simultaneously.

Plan of Attack - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Plan of Attack (ISBN 074325547X) is a 2004 book by Washington Post investigative reporter Bob Woodward billed as "a behind-the-scenes account of how and why President Bush decided to go to war against Iraq" [1]
The book's chief contention, which provides the rationale for its title, is that President Bush planned all along to remove Saddam Hussein from power by force, rather than making any serious effort to use diplomacy or other means.
Positive references to Plan of Attack appear on both the Bush / Cheney 2004[2] and Kerry / Edwards 2004[3] campaign websites.

And the rollout of “Plan of Attack” (Simon and Schuster; $28), which within minutes of its appearance in the stores became the tenth of its author’s twelve titles to reach the No. 1 spot on the Times best-seller list, has been to promotion what Noah’s flood is to precipitation.
This has been especially true of “Plan of Attack,” which appears in the midst of a perfect storm of controversy over Iraq and the “war on terror.” Against this roiling background, Woodward is welcomed as a fair witness.
Yet “Plan of Attack” is full of tantalizing hints that “father issues” (in the current phrase) might present a problem.

First World War.com - Battles - The Battle of the Somme, 1916
Comprising the main Allied attack on the Western Front during 1916, the Battle of the Somme is famous chiefly on account of the loss of 58,000 British troops (one third of them killed) on the first day of the battle, 1 July 1916, which to this day remains a one-day record.
The German Verdun offensive transformed the intent of the Somme attack; the French demanded that the planned date of the attack, 1 August 1916, be brought forward to 1 July, the aim chiefly being to divert German resources from Verdun in the defence of the Somme.
Meanwhile the British attack was renewed in north-east, the Battle of Flers-Courcelette, by the Fourth Army on 15 September.

Anthrax attacks in the fall of 2001 put the nation on alert: Bioterrorism could strike domestically, with devastating effects.
We haven't yet come to grips with the likelihood that a large bioterrorist attack - or worse, a series of attacks - would demand federal leadership and orchestration beyond anything we have experienced, or are organized to accomplish.
Only small amounts of a biological agent are needed in each attack, large amounts can be produced relatively easily, attacks can escape detection until well after the fact, and an attacker can launch a biological agent from a distance, then relocate.

USNews.com: The Pentagon has a secret new strategy for taking on terrorists--and taking them down
Officially titled the "National Military Strategic Plan for the War on Terrorism," the document is the culmination of 18 months of work and is a significant evolution from the approach adopted after the 9/11 attacks, which was to focus on capturing or killing the top al Qaeda leaders.
For the first time since then, Pentagon officials say, they have a strategy that examines the nature of the antiterror war in depth, lays out a detailed road map for prosecuting it, and establishes a score card to determine where and whether progress is being made.
The origins of the new plan lie in an October 2003 "snowflake," as Rumsfeld's numerous memoranda to his staff are called.

This was a violation of Schlieffen's plan which did envision a French attack in central France (in order to recover Alsace-Lorraine) but planned to give ground before it thus drawing French forces away from Paris and the right wing.
Since the Germans could not have switched the focus of their attack from Belgium to the Ardennes, I assume that the plans captured were those of the Ardennes attack, not the WWII version of the Schleiffen plan first conceived.

The vigorousness of the insurgency in Iraq today stems directly from the fact that the United States did not plan well enough for the occupation; we lost a critical window of opportunity because we failed to anticipate the widespread civil disorder and looting that followed the capture of Baghdad.
We were simply not on the lookout for the early signs of a social climate favorable to resistance; as a result, we were not able to suppress the insurgency before it had a chance to grow and gain momentum.
Insurgents try to disrupt daily life and commerce with their attacks; they hope that security-force countermeasures will alienate the population and create a public impression of the authorities as oppressors rather than protectors.
