Planar array - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In telecommunications and RADAR, a planar array is an antenna in which all of the elements, both active and parasitic, are in one plane.
Note 1: A planar array provides a large aperture and may be used for directional beam control by varying the relative phase of each element.
Note 2: A planar array may be used with a reflecting screen behind the active plane.

Phased-Array Simulation For Antenna Test Range Design
For the array, a Taylor aperture distribution is assumed in the horizontal direction and a constant distribution in the vertical direction.
Considering a planar scanning configuration where the probe is moved in a plane parallel to the array face at a fixed distance, a number of mechanical errors may be introduced in the scanner simulation.
The near-field scan is simulated for a probe at a distance of 0.1m away from the array face and covering a scan area of 1.9m x 1.9m to allow far-field angular coverage from –80 to +80 degrees in both azimuth and elevation.

While the multi-element planar array antenna according to the first embodiment has been described with particular emphasis on the operation during transmission, the antenna operates in a manner similar to the foregoing during reception as well, as should be understood in consideration of the reversibility between the transmission operation and reception operation in antennas.
In this planar antenna, functional circuit 11, for example, a semiconductor device, an integrated circuit or the like is mounted by surface mounting, flip chip bump technique or the like, at the intersection of slot lines 4a, 4b on the first principal surface of substrate 3 in the planar antenna of the first embodiment.
Specifically, in the planar antenna according to the sixth embodiment, second substrate 8 made of a dielectric material or the like is laminated on substrate 3 with one principal surface of second substrate 8 opposing the first principal surface of substrate 3 in the planar antenna according to the first embodiment.

 American Permahedge, Inc. v. Barcana
The "filament means forming a planar array" limitation, according to the district court, requires that the branch and the needles radiating therefrom, when viewed edgewise form a thin, flat plane, rather than that the overall hedge form a uniform wall with planar surfaces after several branches are woven into the fence.
The dispositive question is whether the "planar array" limitation means that: (a) the branches and needles form a thin, flat plane, or (b) the overall hedge (comprised of several rows of branches) forms a plane when the branches are woven into the fence.
Accordingly, we agree with the district court's claim construction that the "planar array" limitation refers to the filament means forming a flat plane before they are woven into the fence and not the overall look of the fence after the artificial greenery is woven into the fence.

Planar array antenna, comprising coplanar waveguide printed feed lines cooperating with apertures in a ground plane - ...
A planar antenna of the kind comprising feed lines disposed in a flat circuit and cooperating by hyperfrequency coupling with a metal ground plane plate pierced by apertures has the feed lines presenting a termination juxtaposed with each aperture.
Unfortunately, the performance of patch array antennas made by printed circuit techniques has always been limited due to a compromise imposed on substrate thickness: a thick substrate was required for improving bandwidth and radiation efficiency, but a thin substrate was required for better impedance control, low spurious radiation and low feed line losses.
An object of the present invention is to provide a planar array antenna of the kind referred to whose structure and manufacture are simple, so as to achieve a low overall cost.

Therefore, in the late 1980’s the monolithic planar array was born into existence.
The planar array is much more rugged of an assembly and not subject to thermal shock and vibration that the chip capacitors surface mounted would face.
Thermal stress from the connector shell is not transferred to the capacitor arrays due to a gap between the outside diameter of the ground plane and the inside of the shell.

Distributed planar array beam steering control with aircraft roll compensation - Patent 4980691
Rather, it is necessary to calculate (using for example multiple term trigonometric expressions) the phase shift for each individual array element and to then use the result of the calculation to control the phase shifts associated with the array elements (i.e., to provide a two-dimensional phase shift contour appropriate for the desired radiation characteristic).
When the array is first constructed and tested, various tests are performed on each array element individually to determine which "type" of element it is. That is, each array element is tested individually and characterized as being one of eight different element "types" based upon performance characteristics.
However, the preferred embodiment system 10 is capable of spoiling the array 12 asymmetrically (i.e., different spoiling contours may be applied in the azimuth and elevational planes)--and moreover, is capable of compensating the spoiling function for different array 12 orientations (e.g., as the array 12 is rotated due to aircraft roll maneuvers or the like).

In the Bayer approach, color imaging is effected by a single imaging array composed of individual luminance and chrominance sensing elements that are distributed according to type (sensitivity) in repeating interlaid patterns, the luminance pattern exhibiting the highest frequency of occurrence--and therefore the highest frequency of image sampling--irrespective of direction across the array.
The invention also provides for a color filter array comprising filter means comprising a plurality of radiation-intercepting means defining a planar array of filter elements, said filter element containing a transparent, polymeric layer capable of receiving a dye, wherein said filter array contains a layer comprising the adhesive described above.

Abstract   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The authors are concerned with the accuracy of azimuth and elevationestimates provided by a planar array of sensors and its relation tothe array manifold differential geometry.
The paper builds on previouslypublished results regarding the influence of manifold differentialgeometry on the detection and resolution capabilities of linear arrays. The manifold of a planar array is introduced in terms of two families ofconstant-azimuth and constant-elevation curves, and their differentialgeometry is analysed as a function of array configuration.
Circularapproximation is subsequently employed to derive novel expressions forthe Cramer-Rao lower bound on azimuth and elevation estimates in termsof the arc lengths and first curvatures of the respective constant-parameter manifold curves.

The present investigation of sequentially pulsed semi-infinite planar dipole arrays extends our previous studies of sequentially pulsed infinite and semi-infinite line dipole arrays and of infinite planar dipole arrays.
After a summary of necessary results from the earlier studies, emphasis is placed on the new truncation-induced TD results and interpretations, which are extracted via phenomenology-matched high-frequency asymptotics from rigorous frequency and time domain formulations parameterized in terms of the dispersive FW instantaneous frequencies and wave numbers.
As in our previous studies, the outcome is a numerically efficient, physically incisive algorithm whose accuracy is verified preliminarily by application to a pulsed planar strip array of dipoles.
