Plane (tool) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Early planes were probably made with wooden bodies, a square slot or mortise through the center of the body, and the cutting blade fixed in place with a wooden wedge, tapped in and adjusted with a small mallet or a piece of scrap wood.
Note that these diagrams and phrases apply to planing the wide face (flat grain) and/or long side (side grain) of a typical piece of lumber, which is cut so its wide face is along the grain.
Because of the nature of wood, planing the end grain of the board is physically different than planing the wide face or the long side.

When the Free Plane tool is selected, it immediately returns the coordinate system to world space.
Using Snap mode, the origin of the plane moves along the selected axis, so that the snapped point lies on the plane, which passes through the origin and is perpendicular to the selected axis.

To translate the plane tool in the direction normal to the plane, click the mouse-probe button (the right button by default--see Section 20.3 for information about changing the mouse functions) anywhere on the gray part of the plane tool and drag the mouse until the tool reaches the desired location.
Click the mouse-probe button in one of the white squares at the plane tool's corners (shown in fl in Figure 19.6.2) and drag the mouse to stretch or shrink the tool.
