  London Plane Tree: Feb 2003
The London plane tree (Platanus acerifolia) is a hardy ornamental tree in Manhattan, Kansas.
This tree is a hybrid of the oriental plane tree (Platanus orientalis) and the American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis).
Based on the longevity of the oriental plane tree and the American sycamore, hybrid specimens may not begin to become decrepit until they have reached 500 years of age.

Sycamores, also called plane trees, are among the most common shade trees planted in the United States and Europe.
The London plane tree is the popular interspecific hybrid, widely cultivated from the Avenue des Champs-Elysées to Bruin Walk.
Plane trees are thereby designed for wind pollination, in which copious, lightweight pollen is released and the stigmas are adapted to provide maximal exposure to intercept the pollen grains being carried by the wind.

 Info on Plane Rooted Trees
A rooted plane tree is a rooted tree with a left to right ordering specified for the children of each non-root vertex.
Notice that trees (3) and (4) are equivalent as rooted trees and that the mirror image of tree (5) is not in the list since it could be obtained from (5) by rotating its subtrees about the root.
Alternatively, a rooted plane tree can be thought of as an equivalence class of ordered trees, where two ordered trees are considered equivalent if one can be obtained from the other by a circular rotation of subtrees about the root.

 Info on Free Plane Trees
We represent a free tree as a rooted tree by picking a centroid of the free tree to be the root.
When a tree has two centroids, we can simply generate two level sequences of size n/2 (corresponding to the two subtrees obtained when the edge is removed between the two centroids) such that the second level sequence is lexicographically greater than or equal to the first level sequence.
The level sequence of the free plane tree on the left is 0 1 1 1 1 2 2 2, the one on the right is 0 1 1 2 1 2 2.

The Oriental Plane is first mentioned, among English writers, by William Turner, "the father of English botany," in his "Herbal," printed at Cologne in 1568; and in 1596 John Gerard had it growing in his garden in Holborn, the history of his specimen being subsequently given by him in his "Herball" (1597), p.
No Planes are known to the east of Kashmir, though, on the analogy of the distribution of tulip-trees--if the theory of the eastward retreat of the European flora of Miocene times towards America be well founded--we might expect them to occur in China or Japan.

 Binary Space Partitioning Trees FAQ
Overview Partitioning a polygon with a plane is a matter of determining which side of the plane the polygon is on.
Each node in the BSP tree defines a partition line (this does not have be a linedef in the world but usually is) which is the equivalent to the partition plane of a 3d BSP tree.
Tree balancing is important for these applications because the time complexity for classification is based on the depth of the tree.
