PlanetSide is set in a far-off future, where humans have colonized a planet named Auraxis, discovered on the other side of a wormhole.
Of course, the main thing that sets PlanetSide apart from other shooters is that your character info is saved on the server when you leave, with the three empires battling it out 24/7.
However, there is a penalty -- since PlanetSide is set on such a huge world (you could spend hours traveling from one side of a land mass to the other), getting killed can costs you huge amounts of time if you're forced to respawn far away from where you want to be.

 GameSpy.com - Review
As the first combatants got their first kills, the virtual world of Auraxis was off to a good start, with only a few small patches and some minor lag issues.
For others, though, PlanetSide may be the perfect fit to fill a genre that's been waiting to explode for a few years.
The world of PlanetSide is positively HUGE, and unless you enjoy spending long stretches of time running through empty fields, traveling any significant distance on foot is a bad idea.

Gaming Illustrated - Planetside MMORPG for PC Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
Planetside is worrying as for your monthly subscription, you don't really get much more content and depth than a game such as Tribes 2 - the very first game I actually reviewed for this site well over a year ago - and because of this I treat it with caution.
At the moment though, you take your choice, Planetside is a fun game, but whether there is enough to it to demand a monthly fee being sapped from your credit card is another thing altogether.
Planetside is a game I would recommend without hesitation were it on a slightly smaller scale with no fees attached.

This is not a decision to be made lightly, as each faction has its own special vehicles and weaponry, so it’s a good idea to read through the FAQ to understand the differences between the factions and their equipment.
PlanetSide is still in beta, and as such, has a few bugs to be ironed out, not the least of which is the network code, which makes for incredibly laggy games when you have more than a few characters on-screen at once.

PlanetSide for PC Review - PC PlanetSide Review
PlanetSide was clearly the result of a lot of ambitious planning, but much of the game experience depends on technical stability and the performance of other players.
But PlanetSide has a lot going for it: It has a persistent world with persistent goals that give players real incentives to work in teams, and it has an extremely strict system for dealing with "grief" players--unruly players who shoot up their own teammates just to spoil their fun.
PlanetSide's graphics are generally decent, and in some cases they're quite good, especially in its dynamic skies and sweeping outdoor landscapes.

As PlanetSide is a pay-to-play game as well, I am leaving the value assessment off; there is simply no way to gauge this.
PlanetSide was originally going to be a Multiplayer First Person Shooter where you, the Mercenary, were going to offer up your services to corporations fighting for planetary domination.
As the battles raged on (in beta), it was obvious that fighters would reach their top rank (BattleRank 20) in a fairly short time (a few weeks, possibly a couple of months for the more standard player) and that seasoned fighters would have dealt with almost all types of scenarios presented by the game.

 PlanetSide - review - play.tm
First things first, PlanetSide is a very very large game indeed, and not purely because you’ve got a great big world to explore and survive within but because you’re thrown into all manner of situations, from defence of key vehicles and bases, to attacking fronts on the cusp of victory or annihilation.
Couple this with the often immediately hostile nature of the PlanetSide world; from snipers to air-strikes and invisible assassins, this multitudinous landscape is not an inviting one.
The great thing about PlanetSide is that the pure variety of options can make for some very varied assortments of armies, that in turn are more successful thanks to their different strengths and weaknesses.
