Topic: Planetarium projector

Planetarium Information - Miami Museum of Science & Planetarium
The Miami Planetarium opened its doors to the public on November 4, 1966 and has entertained and educated children of all ages about astronomy and the wonders of the night sky ever since.
The Planetarium, home to Jack Horkheimer’s Star Gazer, the world’s first and only weekly television series on naked-eye astronomy, houses a 65-foot diameter domed projection screen with 231 seats.
At the heart of the Planetarium is a SPITZ “Space Transit Planetarium” star projector, which is capable of accurately reproducing the stars and planets as seen from anywhere on Earth at any time during the year.

A planetarium is a domed theater in which a realistic and scientifically-accurate simulation of the night sky is created, using a highly-specialized "star projector." With this projector, the movement and relative positions of the Sun, the Moon, and the five naked-eye planets can also be shown against the stars.
In most cases, the star projector can be rotated about several different axes of motion, giving a planetarium the ability to show the correct sky for any date of the year and any location on the surface of the Earth.
The Planetarium's main instrument - the large star projector at the center of the theater - is 13 feet (4 meters) long, weighing approximately 5000 pounds (2300 kg), and projects a field of 3800 stars.

But a group of protesters, led by former planetarium employee Glenn Walsh of Mt. Lebanon, is opposed to the public funding unless the Children's Museum restores and reuses two historic pieces of equipment from the old Buhl.
One is a Zeiss II projector that for years was used to display the stars and planets on the domed ceiling of the "Theater of the Stars." The other is a 10-inch refractor telescope once used to study the sun.
He said the Zeiss projector could remain stored under the floor until a new use is found for it, or could be transferred to the science center as an exhibit.

When the Planetarium opened in 1952, it was only the seventh large planetarium in the entire United States and the only one that used a star projector designed and built domestically.
The opening of the new planetarium, with it's American-made projector made national news, coming at a time of growing interest in space exploration, but before NASA launches were common or man had walked on the Moon.
Planetariums were so novel in 1952 that some early audience members would call the box office prior to their visit to ask if the evening's show would be cancelled due to fog.

One method is to run a screw through the bottom of the turntable to the rod; if the enter of the turntable is hollow, then you may need to duct tape the battery assembly to the turntable or mount a piece of thin plywood on top of the turntable.
The last step for the basic projector is to mount the turntable bottom on a piece of plywood, and then attach this via a hinge to a base.
When using the projector in the dome, the projector should be mounted at the center of the sphere, at the height of the top of the base ring.
