The Society is dedicated to the exploration of Mars and the rest of the Solar System, the search for Near Earth Objects, and the search for extraterrestrial life.
The Society launched the Cosmos 1 craft in June 2005 to test the feasibility of Solar sailing, but the satellite's launch rocket failed shortly after liftoff.
The Planetary Report is the bimonthly flagship magazine of the Society.

 ScienceDaily: Planetary Society Grant Recipient Tracks Intriguing Near Earth Object
Science Daily — Frank Zoltowski, a recipient of a Planetary Society Gene Shoemaker Near Earth Object (NE0) grant, has helped determine the future orbits for asteroid 1999 AN10, which is expected to pass within 200,000 kilometers (about 120,000 miles) of Earth in 2027.
The Planetary Society grant money enabled him to upgrade his CCD camera to a more sophisticated system, improving his ability to detect NEOs and do confirmation of their orbits.
Gene Shoemaker, for whom the Society's grant program is named, was a leading scientist in the study of impact craters on earth and elsewhere in the solar system.

The Planetary Society launched a prototype "solar sail" into space on June 21st, marking the first attempt to prove that thin films of reflective material can be deployed in space to capture the solar wind.

The Planetary Society is taking out ads today in several publications, including the Washington Post, calling for the reversal of planned cutbacks in NASA space science programs.
The society is also holding an event on the Hill to mark the anniversary and make their case for increased space science funding.
I think the Planetary Society is not really against human exploration of the Moon (although they would prefer Mars), as long as it doesn't eliminate the robotic exploration that is their main reason for existing.

Almost half a century later, The Planetary Society will remind Congress today of the vision needed to undertake such space ventures by hosting a special presentation in Washington DC that features filmmaker James Cameron, Bill Nye the Science Guy, planetary scientist Heidi B. The Belize Diary will link Internet users with scientists in the field who are searching for evidence of the asteroid impact that many believe ended the age of the dinosaurs 65 Ma ago.
Past Society expeditions to the region have collected samples of ejecta blanket material - debris blasted from the Chicxulub crater when the asteroid crashed just off the coast of the Yucatan.
While this is the Planetary Society's fourth expedition to Belize, it is the fifth sent by the Society to study evidence of the Chicxulub impact.

I became a member of it because I was originally a member of a group called the L-5 Society in the late 1970s, which eventually joined forces with another Space advocacy group, and then when I saw some mail for the Planetary Society, I joined it too.
The Planetary Society is also involved with the SETI@home project, where people all over the world can tap their computers into the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, by downloading data from space which their computer can help process when its screensaver is activated, and see if there's any coherent/intelligent signal in all the static.
There were about 50 passengers from the Planetary Society, 50 from various other places around the world, and about 35 crewmembers, scientists, and naturalists.
