Ariadne was a sprawling planet with a population of around 500 million humans and home to a Zohar research facility, as well as one of the Zohar Emulators.
Juli Mizrahi mentions to Ziggy just before he leaves to rescue MOMO from the U-TIC Organization that the S.O.C.E. was performing an experiment between Second Miltia and Michtam that was "vital to the future of the human race," and tied to the Zohar Project.
The planet now lies in ruins, and it is said that the Federation is terraforming a near-by planet, possibly the fourth, in the Michtam system to act as a replacement.

In brief, the message is that Xenosaga won't have many bonds with Xenogears: it won't be a sequel, as many players were supposing, neither a prequel, as you may think considering what has been revealed concerning the plot and the characters.
These are the premises but the story of Xenosaga, which is the first one of a series that will count six episodes, begins with the discovery of an unknown and mysterious entity, the Zohar, considered as an endless and powerful generator of energy, existing since the birth of the universe.
Xenosaga is an important step for Namco to gain further importance in the world of console videogames.

Xenosaga was at first speculated to have been a sequel of Xenogears but in actuality the designers of Xenogears decided that they wanted to start fresh, telling the history of the universe and time period Xenogears took place in.
Xenosaga will feature many cut-scenes that will pass along the storyline to the player, and these will be one of the major parts of the game, so those not satisfied with story driven RPGs should stay away from this one.

The planet and its surrounding neighbors erupted into cataclysmic conflict as forces from all across the galaxy all began to invade the area, grasping desperately for this "Zohar".
The Galactic Federation harshly punished all involved planets, forcing them to demilitarize and imposing harsh restrictions, also setting up extensive war reparations programs to fund the now homeless people of Miltia and the surrounding planets which were also thrown into the conflict against their will.

Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose (which means beyond good and evil) is the second game in the ambitious Xenosaga series.
The storyline of Xenosaga is a very serious one, and I think this change pushes Episode II a step ahead of its predecessor, at least visually.
Since Xenosaga Episode II takes place primarily on the surface of planets rather than in spaceships, this problem is far less of an issue, and there seems to be a conscious effort to give the world a more organic feel to it.

Developed by Monolith Software (the same team that assembled the controversial 1998 RPG Xenogears; the universe of which this newest game is loosely based), Xenosaga is an epic six-part story that's rumored to span three different consoles and almost a decade of time before it finally reaches a conclusion.
As unlike a similarly multi-part collection started earlier this month (Bandai's.hack), Xenosaga is as much a stand alone piece as it is the sum of a much greater scheme.
But for the sake of being thorough and informative, the basic idea is along the lines of this: Six thousand years into the future (aka T.C. 4767) humankind has abandoned their home and left the Earth for dead.
