Planica is the western most valley in the northwest part of Julian Alps.
Suitable terain was found in Planica, but it took almost two years to carry out the idea.
There was a competition in Planica every three years since 1954, but things were not the same due to shorter distances and both younger 'sisters'.

Planica is the cradle of ski-jumping and ski-flying.
Over 60 world records have been broken in Planica, including the first jump over 100m in 1934 by the Austrian ski-jumper Seppa Bradl and the first flight over 200m by the Finnish competitor Toni Nieminen in 1994.
The current holder of the world ski-flying record of 239m is Bjoern Einar Rumoeren who set the record at Planica in 2005.

Ski jumping has a long tradition in Planica, they started in the 1930s, when the first ski jump was built, the Bloudek ski jump, where the Austrian jumper Sepp Dradl made the first jump over 100 metres.
In March 2002 Planica organized the 23rd World Cup Finals in ski-jumping and ski-flying that saw the Finnish ski jumping team with Hautamaeki, Lindstroem, Jussilainen and Ahonen as winners of the team competition, while the individual competition had to be called off due to strong wind.

Planica is a valley which almost touches on both the Italian and Austrian borders.
However during my visit I did not realise that there was a competition under way and in this film I mistakenly refer to the word Planica to mean skiing in Slovenian following a conversation with a gentleman in the petrol station (I do not speak Slovenian and misunderstood him).
