Connecticut College - Arboretum Plant Collections
The Native Plant Collection was established in 1931.
This long-standing commitment to native plants is a mainstay of the Arboretum.
While it is true that plants often do well in landscape conditions rather different than their native habitat, the point here is that we know which native plants do well in the extreme sites-in very wet and very dry soils, in full sun and in dense shade.

NCCPG National Plant Collection - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The NCCPG National Plant Collection® scheme is the main main conservation vehicle whereby the National Council for the Conservation of Plants and Gardens (NCCPG) can accomplish its mission: to conserve, grow, propagate, document and make available the resource of garden plants that exists in the United Kingdom.
Most of the collections are based around a related group, for example, a collection of oaks or daffodils.
A few National Collections are of plants introduced by a prolific nursery or plant hunter; The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens and Arboretum hold a collection of Hillier's introductions.

 PLANT COLLECTION
The collection and identification of plants are very useful skills for anyone who works in the biological sciences, and forms a vital base for those planning to do graduate work in botany or biology.
The ultimate goal of making plant collections and maintaining herbaria is: to preserve for all time a series of specimens representing the flora of a region, along with a set of notes that will yield the maximum information about the plants concerned.
The plant collection consists of a series of specimens which are correctly pressed, dried, identified, and accompanied by typed herbarium labels and a one page list of plants.

Plant Collecting - Guide to Plant Collection & Identification - Jane M. Bowles
Plant specimens are laid in folded newspaper between layers of blotter sheets or foam and corrugated cardboard.
Plants in their newspaper folders are piled in layers of alternating blotter and cardboard on one of the wooden frames (i.e., cardboard - blotter - folded newspaper [with plant inside] - blotter - cardboard - blotter - etc.).
Plants with many long, narrow leaves such as grasses will bend and press more neatly if a piece of paper with a slit in it is placed over the elbow of the bend to hold all the leaves together.

 Plant Collection
This collection is due near the end of the semester (Saturday, December 9, 5 pm) and is required to pass the course.
Collections should be plentiful enough to nearly fill a folded newspaper sheet (except for small plants that are rare at the place where they were found; in such cases this should be explained on your label).
Plant parts should be arranged so there is as little overlap as possible; stems should be bent sharply and neatly to fit in the paper, not curved or twisted.

SDNHM: How to Make a Plant Collection
Before collecting plants in the wild, you should understand the legal issues of the ownership of the land and its resources, and the ethical issues of possible damage to wild plant populations and to endangered species.
More and more the conservation ethic is to collect in the wild only when it serves a long-term research purpose, such as documenting what occurs in an area that is proposed for development, or discovering what grows in an area that has not been much explored.
But these collections must be placed in permanent storage in order to serve their documentary purpose, and once in a scientific collection they can continue to contribute to science in many other ways.

 Plant Collections
The USBG Plant Collection includes all the plants that are used to fulfill the mission of the institution with the exception of those foliage and crop plants that are grown for the express purpose of leaving our premises (and care) for permanent or indefinite display elsewhere.
Ideally, for every plant in the collection a programmatic purpose has been designated for which the plant is needed, and which justifies the investment of staff and material resources necessary for its acquisition and maintenance.
While individual plants are the building blocks of exhibits, the plant collection as a whole reflects our institutional history, supports programmatic goals, and helps shape the future.

It is particularly important not to over-collect seed from plants that reproduce primarily by seed.
Small amounts of seed from several plants is better than a large amount of seed from one plant, since the genetic diversity in the collection will be higher, and is more likely to result in capturing a plant most amenable to cultivation.
