Taxonomy Today: Diversity & the Tree of Life Abstracts
Plant taxonomy, with its related studies of plant exploration, floristics, phylogenetics and phytogeography, is a vibrant and rapidly advancing discipline, and one that is of great practical relevance in the race against time to document, understand, conserve and utilise the world’s diminishing stock of botanical diversity.
The Euro+Med PlantBase project aims to provide an on-line, up-to-date and critically evaluated taxonomy of the vascular plants of the European and Mediterranean regions.
Taxonomy is concerned with establishing all types of relationship among living organisms, and in utilising these relationships as the basis for systems of classification.

 Carl Linnaeus
Linnaeus continued to revise his Systema Naturae, which grew from a slim pamphlet to a multivolume work, as his concepts were modified and as more and more plant and animal specimens were sent to him from every corner of the globe.
But Linnaeus observed how different species of plant might hybridize, to create forms which looked like new species.
The need for a workable naming system was made even greater by the huge number of plants and animals that were being brought back to Europe from Asia, Africa, and the Americas.

7 - Understanding and Getting the Most from Farmers' Local Knowledge: International Development Research Centre
Some folk taxonomies are in the form of partonomies, or sets of categories that are "parts of" another, e.g., parts of an ox plough, or parts of a plant or of an insect.
Most striking is that folk taxonomies use generic and specific labels much like Linnaean names: e.g., Honduran farmers use the term hielo negro (where "hielo" is the generic term for most plant disease and negro is the specific name for severe disease).
Defining a set of folk categories is a good start to describing folk knowledge, but local people have a deeper understanding for each of those concepts, which we also need to know if we are going to work with rural people as colleagues in research.

 Carl Linnaeus
However, Linnaeus's plant taxonomy was based solely on the number and arrangement of the reproductive organs; a plant's class was determined by its stamens (male organs), and its order by its pistils (female organs).
This order included conifers such as pines, firs, and cypresses (the distinction between true flowers and conifer cones was not clear), but also included a few true flowering plants, such as the castor bean.
It is true that he abandoned his earlier belief in the fixity of species, and it is true that hybridization has produced new species of plants, and in some cases of animals.

After introducing the concept of homologous parts (of common ancestry, although different in structure) for plants as Cuvier had done for animals—particularly convincing evidence in favour of organic evolution—Candolle, like Cuvier, nonetheless retained a firm belief in the constancy of species.
Accepting the natural history chair at the Université de Genève (1817-41), where he was the first director of the botanical gardens, Candolle undertook the detailed development of ideas presented in the Théorie, first outlining systematic laws of botanical nomenclature in his Regni Vegetabilis Systema Naturale (2 vol., 1818-21; "Natural Classification for the Plant Kingdom").
His system of plant classification found nearly universal application for half a century, during which time it served as a model for other systems.

Plant - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Indeed, any attempt to match "plant" with a single taxon is doomed to fail, because plant is a vaguely defined concept unrelated to the presumed phylogenic concepts on which modern taxonomy is based.
Early seed plants are referred to as gymnosperms (naked seeds), as the seed embryo is not enclosed in a protective structure at pollination, with the pollen landing directly on the embryo.
Plants are distinguished from green algae, from which they evolved, by having specialized reproductive organs protected by non-reproductive tissues.

Plants probably evolved from multicellular green algae called charophytes and were the first multicellular organisms to colonize land.

A strength of Linnaean taxonomy is that it can be used to develop a simple and practical system for organizing the different kinds of living organisms.

A second conclusion from taxonomy is that the generally unambiguous classification of all plants and animals into the higher categories, and the demonstrated impossibility of transition from one to another agree with the view that the original created kinds are forever separate.
Taxonomy is the systematic classification of organisms according to the sum of their similarities and differences.
Taxonomy attempts to classify organisms into group of increasing size: species, genera, families, orders, classes, phyla and kingdoms.
