The plantain family used to consist of only three genera, Bougueria, Littorella, and (Type genus of the family Plantaginaceae; large cosmopolitan genus of mostly small herbs) Plantago.
However, new phylogenetic research (Olmstead, 2003) indicates that this family is much larger, including several genera from (A family of dicotyledonous plants of the order Polemoniales; includes figwort and snapdragon and foxglove and toadflax and speedwell and mullein; in some classifications placed in the order Scrophulariales) Scrophulariaceae, and, according to Olmstead, should be renamed Veronicaceae.

In contrast, the Plantaginaceae and Orobanchaceae were quite small.
Most of the genera that made up the former Scrophulariaceae have been transferred to the Plantaginaceae, making that now the large family and leaving only a few genera in the Scrophulariaceae.
Even the common name of the family has been involved with this systematic shake-up; "figwort" is the common name for Scrophularia and stays with the now smaller family.

 Lamiales
Plocospermataceae are shrubby plants that may be recognised by their rather small, opposite leaves that are articulated near the base of the petiole, and their quite large, polysymmetric, campanulate-rotate flowers with versatile, extrorse anthers and a twice-divided style.
Members of the old Scrophulariaceae are now also to be found in Plantaginaceae and Orobanchaceae (these contain the bulk of the taxa that have moved), as well as Stilbaceae, Phrymaceae, Gratiolaceae and Linderniaceae.
Some Plantaginaceae have similar corolla aestivation, but they are autotrophic and have glandular hairs with the heads divided by vertical cell walls.
