Once again Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre was invaded by the BMC in early May for the International Meet.
Plas y Brenin instructors, slightly nervous VS leaders, North Wales sea cliff devotees such as Pat Littlejohn and Will Perrin, grit fans like James Pearson and Jordan Buys, and older hands like Leo Houlding, Ben Heason, and Andy Cave.
In fact the strong Czech team were regularly seen cruising E5’s, occasionally reverting to jammed knots for protection in preference to nuts or cams (which are not allowed on their native sandstone) On other occasions ropes and protection were dispensed with altogether for numerous deep-water solo ascents of Electric Blue at Roscolyn.

In 1958, John was appointed as chief instructor at Plas y Brenin, the national centre for mountain activities run by the Central Council for Physical Recreation at Capel Curig in Snowdonia.
He built up the status of Plas y Brenin as one of the best places for training and certification in all outdoor activities.
He created the first dry ski slope in Wales in the 1960s, was instrumental in the publication of the seminal Safety On Mountains booklet, and even imported (from Switzerland) a snow-making machine to countervail the unseasonable mildness of the Welsh winter.

The weekend event again proved to be a great success, and concentrated on developing the skills needed to safely introduce novices to the club as well as developing individual personal skills.
After lunch students chose from a variety of indoor climbing or hill walking practical workshops run by Plas y Brenin instructors and a host of highly qualified volunteers.
Many thanks to Plas y Brenin, Mountain Training Trust, the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and all the volunteers, without whom this event wouldn’t be possible.

Neither of us had climbed before, but by the end of the week I was leading Severe climbs in the Ogwen Valley and Clare was seconding V-diff and Severe.
This is run by PYB through the winter months along with other winter based courses such as Ice Climbing (which we will do next year)

Wales on the Web Plas y Brenin National Mountain Centre started life as the Capel Curig Inn, built by the Bethesda quarry magnate Lord Penrhyn in 1800.
Beyond the col is Llyn y Foel with its islands — many years ago it held the best lake-trout in the Principality.
Attractive paths are provided for the final descent to Plas y Brenin; paths that show ample evidence of recreational use by this popular outdoor centre which first opened for courses in the late 1950’s.

After a 6-hour coach Journey we arrived in Pace Y Brenin on Sunday evening both tired and hungry.
Friday it was time to pack our damp belongings away, tidy our cottage and say goodbye to Plas Y Brenin.
Though the week had its share of ups and downs, it is fair to say that for 19 people sharing an accommodation, getting wet on a daily basis and having very little personal space, we all got along fantastically well.

From the car park entrance turn right, along the A4086 to reach the Plas y Brenin National Centre for Mountain Activities, which served for many years as the Capel Curig Inn, later the Royal Hotel after Queen Victoria stayed.
When you can clearly see the forest below, and Plas y Brenin at the end of the lake beyond, pick a path across the grassy slopes, heading for Plas y Brenin.
Re-cross the bridge behind Plas y Brenin, pausing to drink in the sublime view up to the "Snowdon Horseshoe." Rise to the road and turn right back to the car park.

 Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) – Malcolm Campbell
Prior to appointment as a Licensing Authority inspector, he was a consultant in outdoor education and training and an Inspector for the Wales Tourist Board for the voluntary Activity Accreditation Scheme.
He is a highly qualified mountaineer and at various times has been Head ofMountain Rescue, and Head of Climbing at Plas y Brenin.
In the past, Malcolm owned and raced a laser dinghy and is an experienced wave sailor and white water canoeist.
