Plasma lamps (also variously "plasma globes", "plasma balls", "plasma domes", "plasma spheres"', or "plasma orbs") are novelty items which were most popular in the 1980s.
The plasma lamp was "discovered" in 1904 by Nikola Tesla after his experimention with high frequency currents in an evacuated glass tube for the purpose of studying high voltage phenomena.
Plasma lamps are mainly used as curiosities or toys for their unique lighting effects and the 'tricks' that can be performed on them by moving the hands around them.

While electric fields in plasmas are usually small due to the high conductivity, the electric field associated with a plasma moving in a magntic field is not affected by Debye shielding.
For many purposes the electric field in a plasma may be treated as zero, although when current flows the voltage drop, though small, is finite, and density gradients are usually associated with an electric field according to the Boltzmann relation.

lamps, a RF source provides RF energy at a certain frequency to a lamp head, the lamp head being part of a separate resonant circuit which is designed to resonate at the frequency of the provided energy.
The continuous change of the plasma's resistance and inductance changes the resonant frequency, since the resistance and inductance of the plasma are reflected back into the primary or driving circuit for the lamp head.
The lamp with the omega configuration coil was preset to 26 volts and, with assisted starting, when switched on came to near 2700 lux in 7.5 seconds without additional intervention.

 The Fluorescent Lamp: a plasma you can use
The resistance of your fluorescent lamp is not fixed, it depends on the current carried: the greater the current, the smaller the resistance.
The mercury atoms in the plasma generate light very efficiently, but much of it is ultra-violet (UV), invisible to the eye and harmful to it (or rather, it would be, were it not absorbed by the glass).
If a fluorescent lamp were not protected by a ballast, it could in principle draw a huge current.

NASA Lewis Research Center’s Atomic Oxygen Lamp Cleaning Facility was designed to produce an atomic oxygen plasma within a metal halide lamp to remove carbon-based contamination.
Oxygen gas, with a purity of 0.9999 percent and in the pressure range of 150 to 250 mtorr, is used in the lamp for plasma generation while the lamp is being cleaned.
Programs/Projects: Broad applicability to lamp industry-wide variety of glass bulb lamps for lighting and specific wavelength spectral source lamps; technique would assure that hydrocarbon contaminants within the lamp enclosure are not present during sealing and that the lamp function and durability would thereby be improved.

CatEye eventually took this lamp off the market, and is about to introduce a new version of it that addresses some of the problems of the earlier unit.
The system includes a 12 watt ordinary incandescent (halogen) lamp which automatically goes on when the plasma lamp is first fired up, and goes out when the plasma lamp reaches adequate brightness.

In this talk we will hear a brief summary of one method of frequency exposure; the modulated plasma lamp, using both commercial and home-built equipment.  In use, one simply has to be near the device while its running.
Two controls, not exposed to the plasma, were also prepared, incubated and measured at the same times as the exposed samples.  E.coli multiply in about 20 minutes, and provide the typical growth curves you see here.
When a plasma lamp is exposed to energy, it doesn’t just “turn on”, but instead follows a different mechanism.

Using the infrared arc lamp at ORNL as part of a pro-ject led by MandC’s Gail Ludtka, Caterpillar researchers are finding they can spray the coating on first and then use the lamp to fuse it to the steel.
Blue says that some 20 ORNL researchers are using the plasma lamp and that about 12 metallurgical and materials engineers are working with both ORNL and outside users to ensure that the lamp is fully utilized.
John Rivard is pursuing a Ph.D. degree from the University of Cincinnati; he is studying the use of the plasma lamp for direct sheet fabrication.

I haven't been able to get my hands on a lightning lamp to take it apart and check it out and i was wondering how complex it is? I wanna transfer the mechanism to a custom globe and i was wondering if it is possible to if it is just a ton of wiring.
I was more or less wondering if the globe is a seprate piece like a traditional lava lamp, or if it has a hole at the bottom of the globe for all the stuff...let me know if ANY of this makes sense.
The globe is probably the hardest part to construct, as it involves replacing the air inside the glass with neon gas, and sealing it.
